Job Summary/Basic Function

The James E. Walker Library at Middle Tennessee State University invites applicants for a 12-month, full-time, tenure-track faculty position (#401070) as the Systems Librarian in the Collection Development and Management Department at the rank of assistant or associate professor.

The systems librarian is a Collection Development and Management (CDM) department member and reports to the chair. The position is highly collaborative, working with all members of the library and various campus partners. The systems librarian plays a key role in the work of the library and in making resources accessible to library users. They lead the Systems Unit within CDM, directly supervising one systems administrator and one applications support analyst. This is an academic librarian position; therefore, applicants must articulate their philosophy of librarianship in a teaching philosophy statement and share their scholarly or creative interests in a research statement. All CDM faculty members are evaluated in the areas of teaching, research, and service according to university and department tenure and promotion policies.

The Systems Unit ensures the sustainable and effective operation of the library’s digital infrastructure, including but not limited to FOLIO (LSP), EZproxy, and VuFind. The systems librarian will facilitate the optimal use of the library’s LSP and actively participate in the larger FOLIO community. Responsibilities of the systems librarian include systems operations, technology integration, and response to issues or new business requirements. They serve as a primary liaison between the library and system vendors. The position requires resourcefulness in troubleshooting and problem-solving in a collaborative environment. The systems librarian participates in professional development by staying current with trends, updates, and new technologies.

Required Education

A master's degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program is required by the appointment date.

  • Administrator for an open-source system such as Nagios, Matomo, DSpace, Open Journal Systems (OJS), Open Monograph Press (OMP)
  • JSON or XML formats
  • Web Services and APIs
  • MARC bibliographic format
  • Version control systems such as GitHub
  • Leadership, supervisory, or project management
  • Strong communication skills
