DescriptionAs the largest university library system in the Washington D.C.-Baltimore area, the University of Maryland Libraries serve 37,000 students and faculty of the flagship College Park campus. The University of Maryland Libraries share the teaching, learning and research goals of the university. Its role as a key academic resource is evident in its service to the academic community and its actionable strategic plan.
With collections including 3.7 million volumes and more 350 databases, the University of Maryland Libraries allocate 75 percent of its materials budget to electronic resources. Maryland ranks 50th among the 115 member libraries of the Association of Research Libraries and has an operating budget of $23.7 million. The University of Maryland Libraries benefit from being situated geographically within minutes of the nation’s capital and its departments, agencies, and research centers.
The UM Libraries’ Information Technology Division supports the library automation needs of the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI). Working within a team environment, the successful candidate(s) will provide broad programming support to the UM Libraries for the design, development, and delivery of Java-based software applications, large-scale digital collections, and web interfaces. Experience programming in the Java language is desired but not required. The UM Libraries will provide Java training for any successful candidate without prior Java experience.
The successful candidate(s) will:
• Design and develop tools for managing production workflows, large-scale ingestion, inventory control and preservation of digital collections;
• Select and utilize appropriate software languages, frameworks and platforms for new and existing library projects;
• Provide object-oriented programming for various library initiatives;
• Provide web interface development support for digital collection management systems;
• Research and develop applications to interface with bibliographic systems, acquisition systems, reference and circulation systems;
• Utilize project management tools such as JIRA to record and monitor progress; and
• Lead technical development on some projects.
• Bachelor’s degree
• Minimum of three (3) years of programming experience
• Experience creating web applications using a Web Application Framework
• Experience using database connectivity tools such as JDBC or ORM
• Experience using version control software such as Subversion or Git
• Excellent interpersonal skills; Excellent written and verbal communications skills
