MOBIUS is a non-profit library organization that manages library systems for more than 50 academic libraries (and more). We also provide a union catalog allowing patrons from any of our member libraries to search and request materials from other members.  

Although we are a non-profit, all of our employees are employed by the University of Missouri. We're looking for someone with great skills and a cool personality to join our highly collaborative team. 

Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY



This professional information technology position spans a wide range of in-depth support activity to ensure the proper configuration and functioning of the desktop computers, network servers, and the connectivity between systems. These positions are generally structured to be second and third-tier support to other user support functions, and may also be structured as the primary technical support staff assigned to departments/divisions outside of the central information technology organization. A high degree of interaction with people is involved; therefore sound customer service principles must be applied while fulfilling the technical function.

Work includes a wide range of responsibility in providing high-level support and will overlap with some duties of other title series: troubleshoot and resolve problems with personal computers, workstations, laptops, peripherals, network servers, etc.; perform hardware and software installation, configuration, upgrades, and enhancements.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES



Desktop Support

Develop and recommend desktop software standards to include plans and coordination for effective distribution across the enterprise.

Provide support and serve as an information resource related to various desktop and peripheral systems, including PC or Mac operating systems and applications programs. Provide advanced technical support on desktop configuration and planned enterprise setting.

Consult with end users to analyze their information access and processing requirements. Make suggestions regarding hardware and software purchases.

Install, configure, and maintain desktops, laptops, and convergent hardware and operating systems, including installation and verification of peripherals such as network cards, printers, mice, wireless, devices, and add-in boards.

Perform in-depth hardware and software troubleshooting and maintenance on PC and Mac computers. Plan for and manage application of security updates, virus scans. Clearly document desktop system configuration changes in support of enterprise standards.

Provide occasional support for hardware and software not normally supported for the sake of compatibility, productivity, and customer satisfaction.

Update trouble tickets with problem description, status, and resolution.



Enterprise Management

Perform remote software management of desktop computers,

Deploy software applications, security patches, upgrades and fixes.

Generate accurate inventory reports of technology assets.

Assist in developing best practices and standards for enterprise management.

Research and test operating system updates, fixes and patches before they are deployed.

Research, test, document and administer enterprise management tools.

 

Software Image Management

Develop, maintain and distribute complex software images (Windows and Macintosh) required for use in projects and workstation replacement initiatives

Build, maintain, and catalog multiple complex software images.



Security

Research, test, and validate operating system security updates, patches and fixes.

Install, test, troubleshoot and secure client-side firewalls, remote-user VPN settings, internet browser configurations, file transfers settings.

Configure and test security on wireless devices.

Respond to computer security and virus incidents to ensure system integrity. Isolate and repair or rebuild compromised machines in a coordinated manner.

Initiate tactical security scans to identify specific vulnerabilities or unpatched machines. Isolate compromised machines to ensure network integrity and filter ports as necessary.

Promote education and awareness of best practices in the area of computer security practices.



Local Area Network Support

Support, implement, maintain, manage, upgrade or enhance LAN server hardware. Conduct server performance monitoring and fine-tuning. Install network cards, printers, and other devices/components.

Investigate, determine severity, resolve or appropriately escalate various LAN systems problems.

Install and configure LAN operating system, software and programs. Test system to ensure proper functioning. Configure network protocol stacks.

Support and/or implement security for LAN servers.

Troubleshoot network-related problems and compatibility of desktop hardware/software and server hardware/software.



Applications/Software Support

Provide advanced-level support on approved software and applications.

Define, design, and write code for custom applications, utilities, and/or small systems.

Modify or customize vendor-supplied software to meet needs.

Perform systems administration duties, such as adding and deleting users, user directories, passwords and applications, and setting up network addresses, user accounts, and security access rights.

Perform back-up or recovery procedures when needed.

Integrate different computing systems for users if possible and when necessary. Address compatibility issues to achieve the maximum efficiency and functionality under conditions.



Training

Develop and maintain own knowledge of supported products. Attend training and obtain required software and hardware certifications.



Administrative Duties

Create, plan, test, implement, and document projects to better serve users’ needs.

Consult with users regarding commercially available software, site-licensed software, or applications.

May provide assistance in mapping out specifications regarding software, hardware, and network options.

Maintain hardware information for inventory and service purposes.

Document and order warranty parts for various computing systems. Includes completing paperwork, placing phone calls, packing and shipping defective components.



New Technologies

Maintain advanced knowledge of new products, upgrades, and technologies.

Investigate, test, and prepare for upcoming technologies in both hardware and software realms.

Participate in alpha or beta testing of new products as assigned.

Commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Extensive knowledge of Linux operating systems.

At least 2 years experience (or equivalent education or formal training) administering and securing enterprise level unix systems.

Extensive knowledge of Apache configuration.

Extensive knowledge of one of more firewall applications (e.g. ip tables).

Broad range of LAN and desktop knowledge skills.

Expansive knowledge of desktop/workstation hardware/software/operating systems (configuration and connectivity).

Practical technical knowledge and aptitude in the areas of networks, network topologies, network file servers, applicable software, and troubleshooting techniques.

Familiarity with installation, maintenance and support of wireless technologies.

Practical knowledge writing in one or more programming languages.

Strong verbal and written communication skills sufficient to interact with a variety of users and other technical staff.

Strong customer service skills.


Preferred Qualifications

Effective communication and interpersonal skills- sufficient to effectively elicit IT information from users, train users in technical procedures/design, and document IT related procedures.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with those contacted in the course of a work assignment and to participate as a member of a cross departmental project team.

Time management skills and organizational ability for project management.

Ability to work under pressure; meet inflexible deadlines; deal with difficult individuals while maintaining composure.

Ability to coordinate, train, supervise, or manage the activities of others to accomplish goals.

Ability to write complex scripts and applications in one or more of the following languages: Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby.

Experience programming for the web and securing web facing applications

Experience with Drupal.

Experience building virtualization platforms.
