Departmental Overview

The UC Berkeley Library provides scholarly information to all faculty and students that is then used in the pursuit of the University's research and instruction mission. For generations, the primary method for disseminating this information was print (books, journals, etc.). The Library is now transitioning to the provision of these scholarly materials through digital formats. The Library Systems Office is responsible for capturing and creating digital library content and making it available online. Without quality content, the best digital library architecture is useless to the academic pursuits of campus scholars and students. Responsibilities

Application Programming: Enhancing moderately complex current CGI web applications with new features and, under direction, create new ones as needed, creating and modifying web pages containing technologies such as Javascript, PHP, XSLT, CSS, etc. Troubleshooting moderately complex problems in applications, and modifying simple Unix and Linux shell scripts and creating new ones. Closely collaborating with other developers in the department to create solutions well integrated with the current frameworks and supported by clear documentation. Following provided specs, create or modify Drupal sites.

Application administration in the Unix, Linux, and Windows environments: Maintaining Apache configuration files in both applying current solutions for user requests and investigating new approaches as needed, configuring and managing security software tool to verify and maintain the integrity of system files on multiple production machines, managing various third party software packages. Required Qualifications

- Good analytical and communication skills (both oral and written) - Understanding of CGI programming techniques and web application programming - Working knowledge and experience with mobile design and development, including responsive design. - Demonstrated skill in hand-coding HTML and CSS, and knowledge of HTML and CSS specifications and other W3C standards, including, but not limited to XML, XSL, etc. - Demonstrated skill in PHP programming - Demonstrated skill in JavaScript programming (including knowledge of AJAX and jQuery) - Demonstrated skill building sites with Drupal, especially developing custom themes - Working knowledge of Linux - Ability to effectively work as part of a team and collaborate with colleagues - Ability to maintain knowledge and rapidly learn new web technologies - Ability to work unusual hours on short notice in order to resolve critical problems or comply with maintenance schedules. - Ability to manage time and to set priorities that accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities, so that projects or tasks are completed on time. Ability to change, with direction, work priorities to accommodate changing requirements and/or immediate needs.

Preferred Qualifications

- Working experience with Perl and its modules - Knowledge of Linux system administration - Familiarity with the Windows environment - Knowledge of Linux & Unix shell scripting languages, e.g., csh - Familiarity with SQL query language and with relational databases, MySQL preferred - Knowledge of Java concepts and language - Ability to address multiple priorities concurrently - Ability to meet deadlines - Strong customer service ethic - Strong organization and planning skills - Demonstrate skill in HTML5 and CSS3 programming and browser compatibility issues - Understanding of usability and accessibility issues - Experience with Apache and Shibboleth

Salary & Benefits

Monthly:$3,850 - $5,725

Annual: $46,200 - $68,700
