Research Developer (PRoMS and OCVE)

Description

The post is located in the Department of Digital Humanities. The Department is an international leader in the application of technology in research in the arts and humanities, and in the social sciences.  It is in the School of Arts and Humanities, and undertakes research on a collaborative basis across discipline, institutional and national boundaries: it has collaborative relationships across King’s College and with a large number of institutions and bodies in the UK and internationally.

The Department seeks an exceptional and creative Digital Humanities developer to join the Research and Development staff, contributing to the development work across two exciting projects: the Online Chopin Variorum Edition, a digital resource which will provide access to all the available primary sources of Chopin’s music via a pioneering user interface allowing bar-by-bar comparison of the content; and the Production and Reading of Music Sources, 1480 – 1530, which combines complex web-based cataloguing with image annotation tools and will present synthetic results to end users via sophisticated data visualisation functionality.

Every research project within the department is characterised by innovation, and the successful candidate will be expected to develop technically imaginative, creative, and elegant solutions whilst at the same time sustaining an awareness of best practices and standards compliance

The successful candidate for this position would ideally have existing Digital Humanities experience across a number of subject domains - though equally you might have a background in Informatics, or in industry.  Whatever the case, you will need to show an obvious enthusiasm for the work of the Department, and demonstrate outstanding skills as a developer. 

You will be capable of writing your own tools and scripts to facilitate data processing when you need to, and able to model and analyse structured data.  Experience in creating and manipulating structured data with a range of data and web-delivery standards and technologies (SQL, together with Python and the Django framework) is essential, and the successful candidate will also need to show significant experience developing web applications with complex user interfaces and interaction models.  You will have a good working knowledge of current standards such as HTML5 /CSS3, and plenty of experience working with complex JavaScript applications (preferably in the content of the JQuery framework).

The successful candidate will need to be able to work effectively as part of a team, as well as independently. You should have good communication skills and the ability to document work in clear written English.

The appointment will be made, dependent on relevant qualifications, within the Grade 6 scale, currently £31,331 to £37,382, per annum pro rata plus £2,323 per annum pro rata London Allowance.
