Position Focus
The Digital Production Manager will report to the Digital Content Services Librarian in the DSCA-Digital Studio which is a unit within Digital Special Collections and Access (DSCA) department of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library (BRBL). DSCA provides leadership, services and strategic direction that enables access to digitized and born digital special collections content across Yale Library.
The DSCA-Digital Studio currently produces high resolution images for patron-driven digitization, exhibits, loans, and proactive digitization. This new position will allow the unit to expand its services to include Reference-quality digitization in its service portfolio.
The Digital Production Manager will manage the newly reimagined reference-quality digitization service track for Beinecke Library collections. This service track will create pdf copies of collection materials to fulfill reference requests from both Yale and non-Yale patrons. It is estimated that this service track will produce 250,000 – 300,000 images per year. The successful candidate in this position will also coordinate with digitization studios in DSCA and Preservation & Conservation Services to facilitate requests for publication-quality digitization, AV digitization, and Born-digital file transfers. The Digital Production Manager will collaborate with staff within the department and across the library including Access Services & Operations, Academic Affairs & Instruction, Collections and Community Engagement, to establish standards-based workflows and technical specifications for this new digitization service track in line with the Digital Special Collections Policy for Yale Special Collections.
Responsibilities:
- Supervises staff responsible for digitization of patron-initiated reference requests for special collections materials.
- Manages Reference-quality digitization service track including assessment of materials, tracking and routing of requests to appropriate digitization track, quality control and processing of digital content, and file management.
- Oversees physical movement of materials for digitization workflows. Responsible for establishing workflows, and documentation pertaining to reference-quality digitization service track. Implements digitization standards outlined in the Digital Special Collections Policy for Yale Special Collections.
- Collaborates with staff in Access Services & Operations, Preservation Imaging, Preventive Conservation, and other library departments to set clear expectations and ensure timely and accurate fulfillment of requests.
- Responsible for collecting relevant statistics and developing performance metrics for patron-driven digitization workflows. Responsible for maintenance of scanning equipment, software, and workflow systems.
- Works closely with DSCA Metadata staff, Digital Access Services Librarian, Digital Preservation Services to collaborate on ingest workflows to Preservica and Digital Collection Systems.
- Coordinates with Library Information Technology to evaluate storage needs in support of reference-quality scanning activities.
- Participates in facilitation of digitization initiatives in coordination with the Digital Content Services Librarian to further organization goals. Outstanding communication skills to build and maintain working relationships with all departments of Beinecke Library.
