Description

Fisk University’s Franklin Library seeks a skilled UI/UX Contractor to design and implement an engaging and accessible user interface for a website dedicated to showcasing the contributions of Julius Rosenwald to the African American community. This website, built on the Omeka-S platform, will serve as a public access portal to the Rosenwald Collections.

The contractor will be responsible for creating a user-friendly experience tailored to the target audience, including older populations and researchers, ensuring that the site is both functional and visually appealing.

Essential Functions

UI/UX Design: Design a user interface that prioritizes ease of use, accessibility, and visual clarity. Utilize high-contrast colors, larger fonts, and thoughtful spacing to meet the needs of the primary audience, which includes older adults and researchers.

Website Navigation: Design intuitive and accessible navigation elements, including a sticky navigation bar, dropdown menus, and an expandable search icon. Ensure the navigation design is seamless across all devices, including mobile, desktop, and laptop.

Interactive Elements: Collaborate with the development team to conceptualize and design interactive elements, such as an interactive map, that are engaging and userfriendly. Ensure that these elements enhance the overall user experience without requiring coding from the designer.

Search Experience: Design user-friendly search interfaces and results pages that allow users to easily filter and find relevant information. Focus on clarity and simplicity in the search experience, particularly for users seeking information about specific schools or collections.

Content Presentation: Design visually appealing item pages that include large image displays, carousels, and well-organized metadata sections. Ensure that all content is presented in a clear, accessible manner that enhances user engagement.

Encouraging User Contributions: Design a specific UI element to encourage user contributions, particularly for unidentified schools. This should be an intuitive, visually engaging element that invites users to participate without requiring complex interactions.

Accessibility: Ensure that all design elements adhere to accessibility standards, with a focus on high contrast, larger fonts, and minimal motion. Prioritize ease of use for the target audience of an older user base and researchers.

Collaboration: Work closely with the Project Manager, Senior Software Engineer and other stakeholders to ensure that the design meets project goals and reflects the historical significance of the content.

Documentation: Maintain clear and organized documentation of design decisions, user flows, and wireframes. Provide updates and feedback during weekly check-in meetings.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in UI/UX Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Graphic Design, or a related field. Equivalent work experience will be considered.

Experience: Proven experience in UI/UX design, particularly for websites targeting older user bases, academic audiences, or culturally significant content. Experience with Omeka-S or similar content management systems is a plus but not required.

Skills: Proficiency in design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, or similar. Strong understanding of design principles related to accessibility, responsive design, and usercentered design. Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with a team.

Creativity: Ability to create visually appealing designs that are both functional and aligned with the project’s historical and cultural goals.
