Director of Digital Publishing

Job Description

The University of Virginia Press (UVAP) seeks a technologically skilled, innovative, and visionary publishing professional to lead its digital publishing program. This full-time staff position reports to the Press Director.

The primary responsibility of this position is to manage all aspects of the Press's Rotunda digital imprint, including technical development, ongoing infrastructure operations (both hardware and software), acquisition of new content (in collaboration with colleagues), and supervision and/or creation of workflows for adding and updating content. Secondarily, the incumbent serves as manager, primary contact, and/or major contributor to non-Rotunda digital publications and technical infrastructure of the Press and supervises or performs IT work handled by designated Local Service Providers (LSPs).

Position responsibilities: as Rotunda Manager

Strategic planning

  • Chair an Advisory Committee of internal and external stakeholders to analyze markets, develop content, sustain infrastructure, and shape business strategy in alignment with Rotunda’s educational mission.

Acquiring new content

  • Work with colleagues to identify and evaluate potential new publications
  • Assist director in developing publication agreements
  • Should a new publication require a new software environment, oversee platform development, including budgeting, timelines, and workflows

Management of new content

  • For conversions from print editions, develop conversion specifications, request and approve cost estimates from vendor, manage the workflow from receipt of XML files from vendor through quality assurance, in-house processing (adding to Rotunda framework, formatting, adding metadata and graphics), freelance proofreading, web design and publication
  • For ongoing publications (i.e., ones that periodically add new content), manage the workflow for adding new material

Rotunda customer management

  • Add or verify addition of new customers to the back-end customer database and authentication framework
  • Maintain Rotunda's database of IP address ranges used to authenticate customers.
  • Interface with the IP Registry to update our customer records per their IP address data. As needed, develop procedures for cross-checking our data against the IP Registry's
  • Maintain procedures for delivering COUNTER-compliant usage statistics to Rotunda customers

Founders Online – NHPRC collaborative agreement

Since 2010, UVA Press has partnered with the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) under the National Archives to create and maintain the website Founders Online, with content derived from Rotunda's American History Collection. While that partnership continues, responsibilities of the Rotunda manager include:

  • Annually, work with NHPRC to renew the collaborative agreement for the next federal fiscal year, including budget development and statement of deliverables; enter grant data into Reasearch@UVA
  • Annually, negotiate new publication agreements with rights holders, and insure payment of applicable royalties
  • Periodically update Founders Online with content from Rotunda. Manage the conversion workflow from Rotunda to Founders Online, updating software transforms as needed
  • Take any bug reports submitted to Founders Online email. For technical bugs, delegate bug fixing within the MarkLogic software environment. For content errors, coordinate with project editorial staff to correct text as agreed upon
  • Serve as primary correspondent for email addressed to the general Founders Online contact address, answering and/or forwarding queries as appropriate

Employee and vendor supervision

  • Manage/supervise the work of the assistant Digital Initiatives and Rotunda Manager
  • Manage any temporary employees / contractors hired for e.g., metadata entry and checking, proofreading, graphics design
  • For work done under standing POs, serve as point person for project estimates, timetables, and quality assurance. For work requiring new vendors or competitive bids, serve as point person at the Press for developing and evaluating RFPs and working with UVA Procurement on bid approval

Position Responsibilities: as Digital Initiatives Manager

Interdepartmental and external collaborations

  • Serve as point person for collaborative initiatives with other units of the University, e.g., the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities (IATH) and the Center for Digital Editing
  • Potentially serve as a principal investigator for collaborative grant proposals
  • As appropriate, engage with outside organizations relevant to digital publishing and humanities computing, e.g., serving on the Association of University Press's Digital Publishing Committee or initiatives of the Text Encoding Consortium

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience: At least five years of relevant experience in scholarly or library publishing, digital humanities, or documentary editions with a digital component
  • Familiarity with scholarly publishing and the university environment; fluency in spoken and written English
  • Solid familiarity with common web publishing initiatives and workflows; XML and related technologies such as XPath/XSLT/XQuery; knowledge of the Text Encoding Initiative; solid familiarity with the underlying technologies of web publication, including HTML/CSS/JavaScript/JSON, databases, and modern web design

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferred education: master's degree or above
  • Preferred experience: eight or more years working with XML-based digital publications; grant-writing and/or administering experience; budget development; management of software development projects and/or programmers; experience working with historical documentary editions and their editorial conventions; experience working with TEI-based digital editions; experience writing technical documentation.


Physical Demands:
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

ABOUT THE PRESS: The University of Virginia Press was founded in 1963 to advance the intellectual interests not only of the University of Virginia, but of institutions of higher learning throughout the state. A member of the Association of University Presses, UVAP currently publishes seventy to eighty new titles annually and operates a successful digital imprint, Rotunda. UVAP is located in beautiful Charlottesville, Virginia, a historic and diverse intellectual and entrepreneurial community near the Blue Ridge Mountains with exceptional music, arts, food, sports, and other cultural resources.

We are currently following a hybrid work schedule requiring attendance two days per week in the Charlottesville office.
 

Anticipated Hiring Range: $72,768.33 - $90,960.66 commensurate with education and experience.
