Metadata Discovery Librarian
The Metadata Discovery Librarian collaborates with colleagues in a highly matrixed environment to improve the discovery of and access to Drexel Libraries’ (DUL) digital and print resources including research output, through a wide array of activities in metadata analysis, creation, consultation, enhancement, and maintenance. The Librarian contributes to implementation, policies, and procedures in relation to the discovery and visibility of the professional and personal research assets of Drexel University faculty and researchers through the Libraries’ information management platforms including Esploro, Primo VE, Alma/Alma Digital, and ArchivesSpace, as well as through Google Scholar and other non-library discovery systems.
The librarian will play a key role in developing and implementing discovery strategies, working collaboratively and contributing to the Libraries matrixed programs of Metadata Services, Scholarly Connections, and Library Integrated Technology Services (LITS), as well as leading the Libraries’ Discovery and Access Working Group. DUL librarians also provide disciplinary subject expertise to discipline-based librarian teams that support the teaching and research needs of Drexel faculty, staff and students.
The Libraries operates as a cost-effective, evidence-based, customer-centered organization with a commitment to continuous quality improvement and a supportive culture of diversity, equity and inclusiveness. Reporting to the Director, Scholarly Connections, the librarian may represent the Libraries in university activities and initiatives and contributes to the library and information profession through service, presentation or publication activities.
- Participate actively in initiatives related to metadata and information resource management for the discovery and visibility of the professional and personal research assets of the University; develop resource discovery tools and services as appropriate
Contribute to metadata management by developing, implementing, and evaluating metadata strategies, policies, and procedures, particularly for research objects of any type.
- Provide support and recommendations for optimal use of the Libraries information management platforms, relevant applications and integrations based on building and maintaining in-depth expertise with metadata, information resource management, and discovery functionality
- Ensure discoverability of library resources informed by best practices and trends using a broad and evolving range of tools and services; Maintain current knowledge of the trends and issues in higher education, with a focus on emerging technologies related to discovery and metadata. Proactively contribute to strengthening the Libraries’ culture of diversity, equity and inclusiveness
- Masters Degree or equivalent
- ALA-accredited Library & Information Studies
- 2 years professional experience
- Experience with descriptive metadata creation and management including MARC/RDA and one or more non-MARC metadata formats.
- Possess strong analytical and critical thinking skills
- Demonstrated experience managing and configuring library information and discovery systems
- Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends, workflows, and best practices in search, discovery, and metadata
- Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to form strong relationships with colleagues across the libraries and university
- Demonstrated self-directed learner with ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Evidence of involvement and contribution to the profession through service, presentations or publications
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, inclusive and welcoming work environment with an understanding of value and centrality to metadata work
- Undergraduate degree or professional experience in any of the University’s discipline areas of strategic focus: Health Sciences,
- Technology/Engineering, Design, and Social Sciences
- Experience with tools such as Alma Digital, Primo VE, ArchivesSpace, Esploro or Omeka
- Knowledge of XML, RDF and Linked Data standards and principles
- Experience with programming or scripting languages such as: Python, Perl, PHP, Java shell script
- Knowledge of SQL and relational databases with sound skills in data analysis, remediation, and normalization.
