The Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library

The Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library, with a collection of 400,000 volumes and a wide range of state-of the art electronic services, serves the Yale Schools of Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, the Yale-New Haven Hospital and other affiliated institutions of the Yale-New Haven Medical Center. Library staff work together as a team to provide responsive and effective information support to the Medical Center's missions of research, education, and patient care. Position Focus:

The Public Health and GIS Librarian will provide vision and strategic leadership for the development of innovative programs to support the research, teaching, academic computing, and service missions of the Yale School of Public Health (YSPH).  Major responsibilities will include innovation in information management, development of new programs, and the further development of already established service roles relating to the information needs of students and faculty in the School of Public Health. The Librarian will develop, expand and support geospatial information expertise among Medical Center GIS users. This position reports to the Associate Director of the Medical Library and the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, School of Public Health.

Through a combination of expertise and skills, the successful candidate:

·         Provides reference assistance and liaison services to faculty, students, and staff, including grant-supported work. Promotes systematic approaches to searching for and managing information. Provides robust instruction program covering basic and advanced library research techniques and methods via one-on-one sessions, seminars, and course-integrated presentations. Supports faculty use of distance learning and course management systems and technologies.

·         Manages public health information resources, including development of the collections and information resources, and educational support programs. Formulates, administers and evaluates policies, procedures and budgets relating to acquisitions, reference and electronic materials. Coordinates with other units on purchasing electronic resources, ensuring that public health information needs are met.

·         Assists Medical Center affiliates in the selection and use of appropriate GIS technologies, supports the design and execution of projects using GIS, and provides instructional support in GIS.

·         Maintains virtual public health library web site, working with the Medical Library Webmaster and coordinating with the YSPH Web Coordinator. Create subject specific guides as needed.

·         Coordinates and provides electronic reserves for course websites, leveraging the journals we license and allowing for students to access course materials 24/7.  Includes providing information on managing copyright restrictions, assisting faculty and support staff putting up materials, coordinating with Medical Library staff on scanning of print materials, etc.

·         Contributes to the University Library, School of Public Health, and the School of Medicine planning activities, committees, and task forces and engages in campus, regional, and national professional organizations and collaborative activities.

·         Contributes to the profession and represents the Library and the University in the academic, scholarly, and professional community.

·         Serves as a member of the Medical Library team and works to further the overall goals of the Medical Library

Representative Responsibilities
1. The Librarian 1 is the beginning rank and is expected to demonstrate excellence in meeting the position responsibilities, as defined by the job description and annual goals.
2. Begin to fulfill the criteria for service to the library, university, and/or community.
3. Begin to fulfill the criteria for professional contributions.

Required Education and Experience
Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited Library school. In selected instances, a post-graduate degree in a related discipline may be required or substituted for an MLS. Appointment to this rank is limited to two years at which time it is expected that the individual will develop necessary requirements to meet expectations of performance at the Librarian 2 level.

Required Skills and Abilities
1.      Advanced degree in a related field and relevant professional experience may be substituted for an MLS degree. Appointment to Librarian 2 requires at least 2 years of professional experience and achievements; Librarian 3 requires at least 5 years of experience and professional achievements.
2.      Familiarity with geospatial methods, spatial data formats and models, and spatial statistics, particularly with regard to applications in epidemiology and public health.
3.      Strong public service orientation; excellent analytical, organizational, management, oral and written communications; strong interpersonal skills.
4.      Demonstrated ability to work collegially, cooperatively, and independently with varied groups in a complex organization and function collaboratively in a rapidly changing team environment.
5.      Innovative, resourceful, and flexible. Knowledge of information technology.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills
1.      Familiarity with:
·         Geocoding, aggregation and analysis of health data (and associated federal requirements for protection of such data), including Geographically Weighted Regression and Interpolation.
·         ArcGIS Desktop 10.x, R Statistical Package.
·         GeoDa/OpenGeoDa, QGIS, PostGIS, Gephi, or Google Refine.
2.      Proficiency in one or more of the following: Python, SQL, XML.
