Job Summary

Performs software design, programming, and other tasks required in the planning, development, implementation, and maintenance of the open source Avalon software system. In the course of project development, plans software projects, formulates objectives, and prepares proposals. Develops software programs. Prepares technical documentation. Improves processes and tools. Collaborates with other institutions. Provides training and support. Codes, tests, debugs, and maintains the Avalon software system to support project objectives. Performs systems analysis and design for Avalon, including working with development manager, Product Owner, and development team to determine and document user and system requirements, developing a high-level architecture and detailed system design to meet requirements. Investigates alternative technologies and designs, evaluating the options and recommending solutions to the project team to ensure efficient, effective development. Documents Avalon system for other developers, administrators, and end users, providing other training and support as needed.

The Avalon Media System is an open source software system which enables libraries and archives to more easily provide online access to audio and video collections.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field and two years of experience in analysis, design, and programming of complex software systems, including work in a full-featured object-oriented programming language such as Ruby on Rails or Java. Combinations of education and related experience may be considered. Demonstrated skills in web application, web services development, and XML. Excellent communication skills. Good interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team. 

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree. Three years of experience. Demonstrated skill in working with front end web development frameworks and other highly interactive web user interface development. Experience with an Agile Development framework.

Working Conditions / Physical Demands

Physical demands will be limited to operating computers of various types. Most duties of this position will involve use of computers for long periods of time and require good mental concentration.
