Description

The Library Associate I will prepare items for digitization, scan documents using a variety of equipment, create required metadata for digital objects in the repository, and supervise student workers.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Performs physical preparation of items for digitization. Identifies and reviews items to determine suitability for scanning. Scans documents using a variety of digital scanners and cameras.
  • Alerts supervisor regarding issues with scanning equipment or output. Follow departmental procedures for tracking the status of projects.
  • Helps with audio and video recording when called upon. Can be requested to assist with basic audio and video editing.
  • Draft status reports for digitization projects being undertaken.
  • Undertakes OCR for digitized Textual content.
  • Utilizes OPUS software programs to perform image editing be it individually or in batches so as to correct scanning effects. Verifies and adheres to the established file naming convention. Creates PDFs of digital images. Directs files to next step of processing.
  • Notifies manager when the projects are complete. Assists with systematic organization of the physical items that have been digitized. Helps in compiling statistics of digitization projects. Assist with digital conversion of files from one format to another.
  • Create required metadata for digital objects that will be input in the institutional repository. Update required descriptive metadata for digital objects in the institutional repository. Participate in quality control for digital objects that are to be ingested in the repository.
  • Attend meetings and assist with library events and programs.
  • Pursue opportunities for professional development, including workshops, conferences, seminars, and specialized training classes.
  • Supervise student workers.
  • Serve on library committees when called upon.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Seven years of library, or archive, or museum, or administrative/clerical, or information technology, or customer service related experience

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree
  • Seven years of library-related experience, or digitization background.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of email and complex and varied library online research database searches and/or processing.
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and/or digitization processes.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiar with digital scanners and digital cameras and other Preservation Scanning tools and software.
  • Knowledge of digitization workflows
  • Experience editing digital image files in TIFF, PDF, JPEG; audio, and video files.
  • Experience with Adobe Suite, including Photoshop, TIFF, JPEG, PNG, Thumbnail, GIF, & other file formats.
  • Ability to adhere to internal standards of work by applying strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work collaboratively to accomplish goals.
  • Flexible and ability to adapt and work in a rapidly changing production environment
  • Knowledge of Windows OS computers and software
  • Ability to maintain production levels and learn quickly
  • Initiative in setting priorities
  • Decision-making or problem solving that requires the use of discretionary judgment.

 

Other Requirements:

  • Physical Requirement: Ability to lift light objects under 40 lbs.
  • May occasionally be required to work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
