Representative Job Summary
Yale University librarians work in libraries across the Central, West, Medical, and Science campuses, to build, manage, and provide access to a rich and unique record of human thought and creativity. They demonstrate flexibility, creativity, and imagination in their work and adapt to and help shape a continuously evolving work environment. Yale librarians provide consistently high quality service to the University, and help meet the needs of the local, national, and international teaching and research communities.
Maintains and enhances the Library’s core production systems and services, particularly Orbis, and ancillary applications as they relate to Acquisitions. Handles systems development, implementation, upgrade coordination, troubleshooting, support, training, and documentation preparation. Serves as primary contact with Library IT for Acquisitions and maintains a broad, detailed mastery of core applications and the internal operations of acquisitions. Works with key staff in the Library, especially in Library IT, to plan and coordinate enhancements to our products and special systems-related projects. Participates in the Library's management, assessment, training, and development programs; contributes to implementing the mission of the Library; serves on Library and University committees; and is active professionally. System Librarians maintain professional affiliations in appropriate organizations and keep abreast of the latest developments in integrated library principles and systems.
· Runs, coordinates and monitors production systems services ensuring reliable performance, data integrity, collection of metrics and timely and accurate completion of jobs related to the Voyager Acquisitions module and tables. These services include: database loads, extracts, and transfers; the creation of database analysis and statistical reports; and the maintenance of application parameter tables.
· Participates in system upgrades, new release installations, and special projects related to our core systems and services in the functional area of acquisitions.
· Serves as the project manager and technical coordinator for the implementation of new programs and acquisitions system enhancements including the drafting of specifications for new automated services and coordination with the appropriate units and individuals throughout the YUL system. Develops and coordinates testing, documentation creation and training.
· Manages and/or coordinates the transition of newly implemented systems to production status.
· Establishes productive relationships with individuals and organizations at Yale and at other institutions, particularly those using the same core systems as the Yale Library, in order to advance the Library’s objectives.
· Serves as an expert resource within the Library regarding core production systems. Routinely serves on committees and task forces.
Required Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited Library school. In selected instances, a post-graduate degree in a related discipline may be required or substituted for an MLS. Appointment to this rank is limited to two years at which time it is expected that the individual will develop necessary requirements to meet expectations of performance at the Librarian 2 level.
Required Skills and Abilities:
1. Thorough understanding of MARC. Project management experience and understanding of library operations.
2. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate and negotiate effectively with both library and technical staff.
3. Strong organizational skills. Excellent attention to details. Demonstrated technical aptitude. Strong analytical skills.
4. Proven ability to work within a team environment and actively promote collaboration.
5. Appointment to the rank of Librarian II requires a minimum of two years of extensive experience with automated library systems. Appointment to the rank of Librarian III requires a minimum of three years of extensive experience with automated library systems.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Knowledge of Oracle SQL, Unix, Perl, Voyager, MetaLib, SFX, RLIN, OCLC, HTML, XML. Experience with Endeavor’s Voyager ILS. Knowledge of Unicode and other standards for representation of library information in electronic form such as METS, MODS, EAD, etc.
