HEAD, DISCOVERY & USER EXPERIENCE | ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN OR ASSOCIATE LIBRARIAN

The Indiana University Libraries Bloomington (IUB) are seeking an innovative, collaborative, and adaptable librarian to lead the Department of Discovery & User Experience (D&UX). The Head, Discovery & User Experience Department will provide leadership and vision for the development of a continuously evolving range of services, discovery systems, and online interfaces that support users and ensure a consistent and successful online and in-person experience. The position manages the libraries web presence (Drupal), content strategy for online services, and works in collaboration with the Enterprise Library Services Team (UITS) to deliver the discovery experience for library services and content (Blacklight and EDS).  The successful candidate will utilize their expertise in project management, interactive design, web usability studies and testing, user experience, and web design principles to examine and design the library experience of our users.

This position will coordinate and lead efforts to design and implement an integrated, holistic user-centered experience that incorporates the best of user experience principles and design.  The Head will directly manage and provide leadership for a department of D&UX specialists and will collaborate closely with a number of departments across the Libraries and the university, including Assessment and the Libraries Technologies, and University Information Technology Services, as well as both the Learning Commons, Scholars’ Commons and subject librarians.  This position is a member of the Managers’ Roundtable and other relevant committees to promote and develop a compelling user experience culture throughout the IUB Libraries.  The Head of D&UX reports to the Associate Dean for Research and Learning Services and is a member of the Libraries Research & Learning division. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead the development of a coordinated user experience vision and strategy across a variety of services, spaces, and complex information systems (such as integrated library systems, large scale websites or web applications)
• Develop and coordinate projects to test and improve the user experience of systems, services, and spaces
• Lead efforts to assess interfaces, identify gaps, and develop and implement strategies to redesign and improve user processes
• Oversee the development and integration of library services with campus online environments including the course management system and campus administrative portals
• Manage and lead a staff of D&UX specialists to ensure all user interfaces incorporate user-centered research, design, testing, and best practices
• Actively collaborate with library departments and teams, University Information Technology Services, and other library and university stakeholders to incorporate UX strategies and best practices into all spaces and service points
• Chair the IU Libraries Discovery Layer Task Force that supports system-wide use of the Blacklight and EDS discovery interfaces.
• Work closely with regional campuses to implement changes to shared interfaces and functionalities
• Monitor the effectiveness and success of strategies, policies, processes, and programs and make modifications when necessary
• Maintain awareness of emerging library trends and technology related to user-centered design and content strategy.  Selectively and strategically, implement technology solutions

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

• ALA accredited master’s degree in library or information science; candidates with an advanced degree in a relevant subject area and appropriate experience in an academic setting will also be considered
• Three years’ of experience working in academic libraries
• Significant experience with web and user-centered design, assessment methodologies, and usability studies
• Significant experience and success in leading a department or team, and working cross-functionally to manage projects, workflows, or systems
• Demonstrated experience and success as a participatory team member, an individual contributor to projects, and in working collaboratively across a variety of library and university units
• Demonstrated experience with web content management systems (such as Drupal, WordPress, SpringShare vended products and other similar applications), APIs, web services, and database-driven web applications
• Demonstrated experience working directly with vendors/contractors (such as managing RFI/RFP processes to select vendors for hardware/software purchases, and managing long-term service contracts for web-development services and other SaaS vended contracts.)
• Self-motivated with the ability to set and attain goals effectively and the flexibility to adapt to change
• Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, with specific strengths in communicating a range of project, functional, and technical information to internal and external partners, as well as users
• Understanding and valuing of diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization

Preferred

• Additional advanced degree in human-computer interaction, information science, technical communication or related field
• Supervisory experience in public services or user experience departments in an academic or research library
• Experience with managing and supporting vendor supported or open source web-scale discovery systems
• Experience with traditional and agile project management methodologies
• Experience with open source technologies and platforms
