Job Summary

The Children’s Hospital Of Philadelphia (CHOP) Research Institute is recruiting a new team to build a data and informatics program called “Arcus” that will link clinical and biological data and provide world-class computational tools to solve the most challenging problems in child health.   Recognizing the central role of data to the future of pediatric research, CHOP leadership and the Board of Directors committed to a funding plan, and Arcus was launched in July 2017.  The Arcus team integrates with major scientific initiatives in the Research Institute Strategic Plan: Lifespan, Rare Diseases, Novel Devices and Therapeutics, and Precision Health.  We seek mission-oriented professionals with interest and expertise in the areas of biomedical science, library science, data education, data science, cloud computing, data privacy, and security.

The Data Discovery Librarian II is responsible for the applications and services that provide unified discovery of research and clinical data and spur new research initiatives. As a member of the new Library Science team, the incumbent will plan, implement, and support innovative and user-focused discovery solutions for a new digital archive and catalog of CHOP-generated biomedical data, objects, and collections. The successful candidate will leverage technologies for searching, browsing, and indexing along with user experience principles and assessment methodologies to establish and maintain solutions that meet the emerging needs of CHOP researchers and staff.

The successful candidate will work with clinical, research, and informatics domains across CHOP to learn about the requirements of different data sources, content types, and researcher methods and translate that knowledge into effective applications. The incumbent will also collaborate with fellow Library Science team members on the metadata standards and preservation management solutions required for successful discovery of content.

Job Responsibilities

• Coordinate the implementation and administration of discovery applications that make biomedical research data, objects, and collections findable and accessible for CHOP researchers and staff.
• Define innovative discovery services that integrate multiple content types and sources from across CHOP and connect clinical and research data.
• Apply user-centered design principles to the establishment and continuous improvement of patron-facing library services by mapping services to user requirements and implementing tools for measuring effectiveness.
• Prototype discovery user interfaces, including search results, record display, and navigation that cohesively address multiple content types and user behaviors.
• Independently manage a portfolio of tasks with general instruction, guidance, and supervision from direct supervisor as well as distributed team.
• Ensure adherence to industry standards for web accessibility in patron-facing applications.
• Ensure consistent and accurate documentation of discovery applications for staff and researchers.
• Collaborate with the Digital Archivist and the Metadata Librarian on content and metadata standards and workflows.
• Collaborate with stakeholders, including the Data Education team, on the identification of personas, user requirements, and acceptance criteria.
• Coordinate with technical staff on application administration including implementation, troubleshooting, enhancements, and upgrades.

Required Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in library science, information science, computer science or related discipline
• At least three (3) years of relevant experience in a library setting

Preferred Education and Experience

• Master’s Degree in library science, information science, computer science or related discipline
• Experience with complex digital library projects and/or application implementations

Additional Technical Requirements

• Knowledge and prior application of user experience, service design, and assessment principles and practices
• Prior work implementing or maintaining front-end applications, including working with technical staff and supporting users
• Experience with relevant metadata standards and schemas for describing digital objects and research data, such as MODS, Dublin Core, DataCite
• Experience with employing web analytic tools for measuring and improving effectiveness
• Experience with CSS, XML, XSL, XSLT
• Experience with web development technologies, scripting languages
• Knowledge of web accessibility standards such as WCAG
• Demonstrated ability to learn and implement new technologies and tools
• Ability to work collaboratively in groups and manage projects effectivel
• Appreciation of diversity and affinity for interacting with people of varying backgrounds and perspectives
