The Indiana University Libraries are seeking a skilled senior software
developer to join the Avalon Media System project.

The Avalon Media System is an open source software system, co-developed by
the Indiana University Libraries and Northwestern University Library, which
enables libraries and archives to more easily provide online access to audio
and video collections. Development of Avalon has been supported in part by
grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Andrew W.
Mellon Foundation.

Job Summary

Responsible for the analysis, design, development, implementation and
maintenance of software systems to support digital collections and digital
repository services for the IU Libraries and other academic libraries and
archives. This will include: developing requirements; evaluating and
implementing commercial and/or open-source software solutions; designing,
coding and testing software; defining and implementing interfaces with other
library systems; defining and implementing interfaces with external systems,
such as learning management and storage systems; and working with other
staff to define metadata and content standards.

Works on software projects focused around a Samvera/Fedora software stack in
collaboration with librarians and staff in the IU Libraries, other
departments at IU, and staff at other institutions, playing a lead role in
design and/or architecture on some subprojects.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in computer science or related technical discipline and
five years of experience in the development of complex software systems,
including work in Ruby on Rails and/or Java, and relational database design
and programming.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

Experience in web application development and Web Services, with XML and
XML-related technologies, and working in a Unix/Linux environment. Excellent
interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills including ability to
interact and communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals.
Strong organizational and time management skills including ability to manage
multiple priorities and consistently meet deadlines; and demonstrated
ability to work as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree; experience with digital repository technologies, including
Hydra, Fedora, and Blacklight; experience with library systems and metadata
standards; experience with library metadata formats, such as MARC, MODS,
Dublin Core, and METS; experience with RDF and linked data technologies;
experience working with digital image, audio, and video formats.
