University of Michigan University Library Interface Designer/Librarian Scholarly Publishing Office

The Scholarly Publishing Office (SPO) of the University of Michigan University Library is seeking an Interface Designer for a full-time, two-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal.

The SPO Interface Designer works in a team environment for online publishing of scholarly literature. The Interface Designer will be responsible for improving the appearance and functionality of SPO¹s publications and the user interface to its publishing system, using open standards for web design and open-source content management systems. Projects for the first year may include: design of publishing environment for digitalculturebooks (a collaborative book publishing project with UM Press); interface specification for a database of 20 disciplinarily related journals; assessment and implementation of strategies to increase the discoverability of SPO publications; participation in a review of electronic publishing platforms.

Responsibilities:

- Working in coordination with SPO production and programming staff, design and deploy attractive and functional user-centered publication interfaces. (50%) - Conduct ongoing assessment of SPO interfaces and functionality with user testing, online surveys, log analysis, and focus groups. (20%) - Enhance the functionality of digital library and publishing software by working with others to implement changes across SPO publications. (15%) - Consult with other SPO and University Library staff on interface and usability testing. (10%) - Document interface features for end users and other digital library developers. (5%)

The services of SPO are part of the Library¹s service to the University of Michigan, and are developed in keeping with the Library¹s concern about issues of intellectual property, long-term retention and archiving of content, and its support of scholarship in all forms.

SPO is currently responsible for the online publication of a range of scholarly literature, including significant text-based journal collections, scholarly monographs, conference proceedings, scholarly bibliographies, and image collections.

SPO is a highly collaborative work environment in which staff engage in both the daily work of publishing and in broader discussions of scholarly communication and the transformational potential of digital communication technology. All staff are involved in direction-setting, in articulating a vision of the library as scholarly publisher, and in putting that vision into practice. We have an inclination toward open sourcing software and balanced, pragmatic approaches to problems. We work to embrace emerging technology standards and best practices of the digital library community.

Qualifications:

Required: ALA-accredited MLA -OR- Bachelor¹s degree plus three years of relevant experience working with web-based design or an MA in a related field such as graphic design. Knowledge of XHTML, and CSS. Experience developing interfaces for online information resources. Familiarity with theory and practice of usability testing an information architecture. Strong computer skills. Excellent written and oral skills. Ability to work in a team environment.

Desired: Experience in graphic design for electronic media. Knowledge of and experience with digital libraries or electronic publishing. Knowledge of XML and XSLT. Proficiency with software in Adobe Creative Suite. Experience using online scholarly resources. Familiarity with computer programming, scripting, and databases.

Rank, Salary, and Leave: Rank is anticipated at Web Designer Senior / Assistant Librarian. Salary range is $35,000 - $50,000 annually, dependent on qualifications, education & previous relevant experience of selected candidate. Professional positions receive 24 days of vacation a year & 15 days of sick leave a year with opportunities for professional development and travel.

Retirement: TIAA/CREF or Fidelity Investments
