Description

William & Mary Libraries is currently seeking applications for the newly created position of Web Developer. We seek a creative, energetic, and collaborative individual to build and maintain an extraordinary website to simplify access to our collections, web-based learning resources, and services. The web developer has the opportunity to rethink the architecture and design of our website and develop a user-centered and forward thinking web presence for use by faculty, students, and the broader academic community.

William & Mary is one of America’s oldest and best universities. Located in beautiful, historic Williamsburg, Virginia, the university claims both Jon Stewart and Thomas Jefferson as alumni. U.S. News and World Report recently ranked us sixth among all public universities, and the Library itself was ranked 17th on the list of best college libraries in the country. Working at William and Mary Libraries offers the opportunity to make a positive impact in the educational experience of our small, smart, diverse student body and the chance to experiment with new technologies and projects.

The Web Developer will be responsible for building an elegant, intelligent, and intuitively designed website which anticipates the way that students and faculty search for and find information. The developer manages the suite of William and Mary Libraries websites, including internal web applications (e.g. wikis or intranets), room reservation system (LibCal), and a variety of social media applications. Though there are many other people in the libraries contributing content, the developer is the person who coordinates the overall navigational layout and structure, as well as individual design and graphic elements. This person reports to the Head of Digital Services and works closely with the Applications Administrator and the Assoc. Director of Communications.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of web development using content management systems such as Drupal.

  • Strong understanding of user-centered web design principles.
  • Strong team orientation, exceptional interpersonal skills, and stellar project management skills.
  • Ability to employ a variety of user research / usability methods to make excellent decisions about web design.

W&M Libraries strives to foster a culture of innovation with the Digital Services Team being a central part. The Libraries provide support for professional development and travel, flexible work hours, and opportunities for campus wide engagement.  We value diversity and invite applications from underrepresented groups who will enrich the research, teaching and service missions of the university.
