Job SummaryHathiTrust Digital Library has an opportunity for a collaborative, creative, and service-focused individual to direct the establishment of a distributed shared print monographs archive corresponding to the HathiTrust collection. HathiTrust is a growing partnership of research and academic libraries that are working together to ensure permanent access to the record of human knowledge. Founded in 2008, HathiTrust includes more than 110 members worldwide, who together support a certified trusted digital repository holding 13.7 million digitized volumes, including 6.8 million unique monographic titles. The HathiTrust Research Center, based at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and Indiana University, develops and offers services supporting advanced computational research using the HathiTrust collections. The Shared Print Monograph Archiving Initiative is one of several that HathiTrust members have endorsed as a key strategic program. This will be a large scale, transformative program of HathiTrust, requiring a leader with creativity, experience, and credibility in the academic library community. The successful candidate will be mission and service driven, thrive on complex, multi-partner environments, and capable of defining a shared vision for this program. The Program Officer for Shared Print Initiatives develops and executes HathiTrust’s Shared Print Monograph Archiving Initiative. The Program Officer drives the development of strategy and policy, recruits participating archives and libraries, and defines member services that will result in the program’s success. The Program Officer will develop a fully-fledged business and implementation plan to secure long-term print retention commitments for monographic titles found in the HathiTrust collections. The Program Officer will be expected to develop partnerships with archives, libraries, vendors, and other stakeholders, and will work closely with all HathiTrust staff to achieve the goals of the program and HathiTrust as a whole.
Note: This is a five-year position at the University of Michigan that will report to the Executive Director. The Program Officer is an employee of the University of Michigan, and operates within the rules and policies of the University of Michigan. Relocation to Ann Arbor, MI is desirable but not required.
Job Responsibilities
- Manages the development of strategies, policies, specifications, and services for the HathiTrust Shared Print Monograph Archiving Initiative.
- Develops and maintains business and implementation plans for the Initiative.
- Works closely with or leads relevant HathiTrust advisory and governance groups to align the Initiative’s activities with needs of the HathiTrust membership and broader community.
- Researches, proposes, and plans functions and services for the program’s participants.
- Participates as needed in related HathiTrust efforts such as metadata development and publication, quality assurance, collection analytics, user experience, federal documents, or other topics.
- Forges partnerships with libraries, archives, and vendors to carry out the program’s goals.
- Formally represents HathiTrust in multiple forums to advance the program.
- Supervises staff and/or defines tasks for staff to support collection analytics, project management, data management, and reporting.
- An ALA-accredited master's degree or equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience
- Demonstrated ability to form successful partnerships across complex organizations involving diverse stakeholders.
- Significant knowledge of research, issues, trends, and proposals in collection management, shared print, and resource sharing programs in North America.
- Experience working in and/or leading successful cross-functional teams within an organization or as a virtual organization across multiple organizations.
- Record of creativity, innovation, and problem solving in execution of previous jobs.
- Capable of clear and persuasive communication with a variety of stakeholders.
- Evidence of ability gather, analyze, and interpret data, and to clearly and concisely reporting the results to multiple audiences.
- Exceptional service orientation, including a commitment to services for users from diverse backgrounds with different needs and abilities.
- Understands and values diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization.
- Experience managing aspects of an existing shared print collection program.
- Experience developing and/or managing multi-institutional partnerships.
- Willingness and ability to relocate to Ann Arbor, MI.
- Experience in related areas such as digital repository management, digital preservation, discovery services, large-scale digitization, metadata management, project and process management.

Appointment is anticipated as an academic and/or research program officer, or a senior associate librarian or librarian. Salary and rank dependent on the candidate's qualifications and experience. Librarian appointments carry with them increased expectations regarding professional development, professional engagement, research, and service, in keeping with the library's process for librarian promotion and advancement.
