Position Title: Information Resources Librarian (Sciences)
Scope and Accountability:
The University of Guelph’s McLaughlin Library invites applications for an Information Resources Librarian. This continuing appointment track librarian position will help the Information Resources (IR) Team implement, support, and advance its core goals and priorities in managing the Library’s information resources and collections. As part of the IR Team, the Librarian will provide a variety of services to the library and user community with the goal of acquiring, developing, assessing and preserving high quality information resources that support the strategic directions and goals of the Team, Library and University at-large.
The incumbent will have important responsibilities related to one or more of the core functions within the IR Team, including collection development, collection management, assessment and evaluation and/or working with the Acquisitions and ERM work teams.
With special focus on designated subject areas in the STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine), the incumbent’s responsibilities will include the following:
- Collaborative management of book approval plan
- Development of requests for new journals, databases and other serial resources
- Collection evaluation and assessment
- Selection of monographic materials
- Weeding / relocation projects, including working with staff within the TUG Libraries
- Communication on information resources issues, including promotion
- Completing library course and program assessments as part of the University’s Senate review and/or accreditation processes
- Liaison with faculty, students, other Library Teams and staff on resource issues
- Monitoring STEM open access publishing trends and issues
- Membership on library committees as appropriate
The Library operates in a team-based organizational model. The working style of the IR Team emphasizes the collaborative and interdependent nature of collections work for the benefit of
our user community. Thus, while the incumbent will have special focus on designated subject areas, she/he will be expected to take an interest in the development of all areas of the Library’s information resources and be open to collaboration with colleagues as opportunities arise. IR Librarians work within a collegial environment that pursues common strategic team directions and goals while providing room for discussion and professional autonomy.

An ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS degree is required as is a recognized degree (BSc or MSc/PhD) in the sciences. Experience in an academic library setting working in collection development and management is preferred.
Required qualifications for this job include:
- Minimum of two (2) years working experience in an academic library setting with an understanding of opportunities, issues and challenges affecting information resources in academic libraries
- In depth knowledge and experience of collection development and management practices and principles in all formats
- Experience with book approval plans and faculty liaison
- Demonstrated project coordination skills and the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines
- Strong organizational and advocacy skills, with a focus on excellent oral and written communications
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, the broader community, external partners and vendors; as well as work independently
- A strong understanding of consortia partnerships in context of Canadian Library information resources
- Knowledge of the scholarly publishing industry, and broader scholarly communication issues and trends, particularly in STEM disciplines
- Policy development, implementation and revision related to collection development, assessment and collections policies
- Second advanced degree, preferably in the sciences; as well as one or more of the following:
- Collection assessment experience
- Data management skills
- Budget management experience
