Reporting to the Assistant Director of the Libraries for Technology and Digital Initiatives, and working closely with the Digital Projects Librarian and other library managers, the Metadata and Systems Librarian provides technical expertise, day-to-day administration, and broad support for traditional and emerging library software solutions and standards.

The incumbent will use a variety of technologies, along with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, to provide the best possible experience for library patrons and staff as they seek, access, and maintain the information in our library systems. This will include first-line support as well as maintenance and implementation of library systems.

Specific responsibilities include metadata manipulation, metadata workflow analysis, web interface maintenance, programming, database design, and scripting/solution design in a broad range of systems including our integrated library system (III/Sierra) and interlibrary loan system (ILLiad), our digital repository (Islandora/Fedora), and others such as EZproxy and homegrown systems.

The ideal candidate will display creativity, initiative, and flexibility in his/her approach to problem solving, and will have the desire to experiment with new technology, approaches, and workflows. S/he will have the ability to build and sustain effective working relationships with peers in the Library, and across the Vassar community.

Required qualifications:
  • ALA-accredited master's degree or equivalent education and work experience
  • Demonstrable programming skills, particularly XML/XSLT/XPATH, PHP, Ruby, etc., as well as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Familiarity with metadata standards such as MARC, AACR2, RDA, MODS, and Dublin Core
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively both in a team setting and independently.
