DescriptionThe University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Health Sciences Library (HSL) seeks an enthusiastic, innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented individual to join the Web Development Group as the Web/Database Development Librarian. The Librarian in this position is the primary staff member responsible for design, development, maintenance, testing, and technical management of the ADL database, web applications, user interface, and administrative tools and utilities. The Web/Database Development Librarian is responsible for leading the design and operation of the AHEC Digital Library and other AHEC Program Office systems created to support efficient and effective statewide collaboration on topics and initiatives like patient quality and safety. This position oversees essential processes in the collection, storage, retrieval and communication of information for the purposes of clinical knowledge discovery.
Reporting to the Head of the Web Development Group, the individual in this position works collaboratively with the AHEC ILS Network Director and the Director of the AHEC Digital Library to plan, design, support, and implement new technologies and procedures for all AHEC library programs and other clinical support programs. Expected services include: development and maintenance of ADL architecture using SQL, ColdFusion, PHP, and other appropriate software applications; development of specifications and plans for new version releases and updates; creation of primary responsibility for ADL technical troubleshooting; conducting usability testing on ADL, in conjunction with HSL’s Web Developer Group; working with University Libraries Proxy Services to ensure smooth, easy ADL remote access, campus proxy transition and compliance, and other technical troubleshooting efforts; supporting cross-platform federated search and open url access, and working with member institutions in establishing institution-wide ADL access.
The Web/Database Development Librarian works with several groups, both internal and external to the Health Sciences Library, including: AHEC Information and Library System Network; the AHEC Program Office; ADL member hospitals’ librarians and information technology staff; and Health Sciences Library staff in AHEC and Outreach Services and Information Technology. The individual in this position plays a key role within the ADL and AHEC systems, and requires understanding of the health professionals’ clinical environment, particularly the clinical information systems. In addition to clinical informatics knowledge, demonstrated leadership and the ability to work collaboratively in a team setting are essential.
Required: ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science. Demonstrated experience with design and development with relational database systems. Demonstrated experience with Web-database middleware development and languages, such as PHP, ColdFusion, etc. Knowledge of web user interface design and evaluation. Ability to work independently. Excellent time management and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to support a diverse user population and to work collaboratively and cooperatively with a diverse group of colleagues. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to multitask and set priorities in a dynamic environment.
Preferred: Knowledge of user experience design methods. Experience with systems analysis processes. Experience managing and directing a database development project. Knowledge of the organization and services of libraries. Commitment to serving information needs of the general public and health professionals. Experience with programming languages; PHP, ColdFusion, etc. SQL and Microsoft SQL Server experience. Understanding of subject indexing and classification including metadata schema. Experience working with EZ Proxy or other similar authentication environments.
