Description
The Electronic Text Centre (ETC) in the University of New Brunswick Libraries welcomes applications for the position of Digital Repository and Metadata Archivist/Librarian (one‐year term, possibility of renewal).With a 15‐year history of achievement, the ETC has been recognized as a regional and national leader in digital library initiatives, electronic publishing, and research computing support. The ETC comprises six FTE working in digital asset management and project development, journal production, imaging, and graphic design; an additional varying number of student assistants complement the core staff. Working in this context, and reporting via the Director of the ETC, the Digital Repository and Metadata Librarian will take the lead in developing and maintaining UNB Libraries’ digital repository systems (mainly DSpace, Fedora, and Drupal). The successful candidate will be well versed in required technologies (IR and CMS systems), in metadata creation and refinement, and in best practices around digital content management and data curation.
DUTIES
Manages our digital repository systems:
- Organizes and maintains existing collections; identifies potential new ones
- Ingests / publishes content
- Creates appropriate metadata for items and collections, working in co‐operation with the cataloguing department on descriptive metadata best practices
- Works closely with Systems to ensure repository optimization
- Monitors repository traffic, growth, and other applicable statistics and metrics
- Repository process and policy development
- Increased visibility of repositories; faculty outreach
- Planning and implementing repository services and collections, including development around research data sets
- Digital preservation policy and best practices, in coordination with Archives and Special Collections
- Keeps current with trends and standards in digital librarianship, including rights management / IP issues, open access, preservation, archiving, data curation, and broad IT currents
- Provides repository‐related training to faculty and staff
- Assists in directing the ETC in limited capacity, in the Director’s absence
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA‐accredited institution
- Experience with digital repositories and content management systems
- Proficiency with well‐formed XML; strong, demonstrated facility with standards‐based non‐MARC metadata; ability to investigate and learn new metadata standards as required
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on projects across a wide range of departments and for varying audiences
- Creativity; excellent written and oral communication skills
- A strong commitment to service
Desired:
- Familiarity with Islandora
- Familiarity with Open Journal Systems
- Project management experience
- Intermediate programming and/or system administrator skills; experience working with programmers (e.g., writing spec and use cases)
- Proven ability with one or more specialized metadata schemas or DTDs—e.g., Darwin Core, NLM, MODS, Erudit Article, CDWA Lite, ALTO
This one‐year term appointment, with possibility of renewal, will be filled at the rank of Librarian 1/2 with a salary range of $51,662‐$75,712. Archivists/Librarians are members of the Association of University Teachers.
