Position Summary

Reporting to a Production Editor, the Associate Editor is an important member of the Editorial and User Support Team, providing information and support to arXiv authors, readers, and moderators.

Working in a fast-paced environment alongside a supportive team, the Associate Editor works across team functions, screening submissions for moderation and technical checks, with a focus on metadata validation, and responding to support requests from authors and readers.

This user-facing position represents arXiv to its global community of researchers, referring users to relevant policies and workflows and supporting authors, readers, and moderators throughout the arXiv submission process.

• Duties include but are not limited to:
• Performing technical and validation checks on submission metadata
• Processing paper ownership requests
• Identifying opportunities for improvements to workflows and applications
• Testing system updates for bugs and functionality
• Responding to user queries related to submissions, accounts, and access 
• Interpreting arXiv submission policy and interacting with editors and moderators as part of submission screening
• Coordinating with team members on daily service obligations and long-term process improvement projects
• Maintaining and updating documentation and user help pages
• Serving as an advocate for individuals of all ethnicities, genders, ages, and background

Hours and Compensation

• This position is part-time, 20 hours per week 
• Remote work environment
• Pay rate is $25 per hour
• This position is not eligible for benefits 

Required Qualifications

• Associate degree or other formal training program of two years or equivalent
• One or more years of professional experience in a technical computing environment
• Proven ability to work productively in a supportive role with colleagues and in a team environment, yet also self-motivated and possessing good independent decision-making abilities
• Excellent trouble-shooting and problem-solving skills, as demonstrated by previous job experience
• Able to work effectively and comfortably in a fast-paced, changing environment
• Detail oriented with good record-keeping skills and documentation habits 

Preferred Qualifications (if applicable)

• Degree in a physical science, library/information science, engineering, computer science, or mathematics 
• Experience with writing technical documentation 
• Understands the role and impact of preprints and e-print servers
