Position Summary

The Northwestern University Libraries is seeking a remote, project-based UI/UX Specialist to redesign and simplify the LCNAF2Wiki tool, transforming a complex workflow that leverages APIs and OpenRefine to convert Library of Congress Name Authority File (LCNAF) data into Wikidata records into an intuitive, user-friendly experience. The successful candidate will create a streamlined interface that enables users with little to no technical expertise to complete the process easily and efficiently. Project completion deadline: November 2026.

Key Responsibilities

Design and develop a user-friendly interface; Assess current workflow and identify simplification opportunities; Design wireframes, prototypes, and interface solutions; Develop or configure a simplified interface integrating APIs and data-processing workflows; Conduct user testing and improve usability and accessibility; Create user documentation and guidance materials; Collaborate with stakeholders; Deliver a functional solution and knowledge-transfer documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience in UI/UX design for API-based tools.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Basic knowledge of MARC, LCNAF, Wikidata, OpenRefine, and APIs. Experience in UI/UX design, human-centered design, or user experience engineering. Proficiency with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern front-end frameworks. Experience designing workflows for non-technical users. Familiarity with APIs and data integration concepts. Ability to translate complex technical processes into simple interfaces.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience with similar projects. Experience developing browser extensions for Chrome and/or Firefox. Familiarity with library metadata standards, Wikidata, linked data, OpenRefine, digital libraries, archives, or scholarly information systems.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of browser extension development, particularly for Chrome and Firefox.

Working Conditions

Remote, project-based contract position with regular collaboration and communication with project stakeholders.

*Compensation for creation, documentation, review and delivery of final product is $2,000.00
