Description

The University of Alabama Libraries is seeking a Web Developer I to join our team in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This position is eligible for remote work subject to university policy.

As a Web Developer I, you will write and maintain both front-end and back-end code to support websites and web applications. You'll apply your knowledge of web code standards and frameworks to create complex, dynamic websites and applications that meet university and government standards. The role involves building and maintaining websites, functionality, and workflows using technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and other web development frameworks. You will report to the Technical Development Librarian and work collaboratively within a hybrid team.

Qualifications and Skills

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree and some web development experience.
  • Experience with WordPress or Omeka platforms, including theme and plugin development.

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Relational databases (e.g., MySQL) and SQL queries.
  • Linux virtual machines and SSH.
  • JavaScript, Angular, React, NodeJS, JQuery, HTML, CSS, JSON, and PHP.
  • Experience managing projects and repositories in a version control system like GitHub.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to multitask.
  • Effective communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • The ability to learn new skills and technologies as needed for projects.
  • The ability to collaborate with other developers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with web accessibility (WCAG 2) and SEO best practices.
  • Experience with CSS preprocessors like SASS or LESS.
  • Experience with JavaScript frameworks such as React or Vue.js.
  • Experience with website migrations to WordPress and/or Omeka CMS platforms.
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies.
  • Experience with the Linux command line and system administration.
