Position Summary

The Rockefeller Archive Center (RAC) seeks a highly self-motivated and detail-oriented individual to join its Information Technology team as a Systems Administrator.  The Systems Administrator is a critical position that will manage and maintain all networks, servers, and systems to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the RAC’s IT infrastructure.  

Reporting to the Associate Director for Information Technology, the Systems Administrator is principally responsible for installing, configuring, and maintaining servers, storage systems, and other software that comprise the IT infrastructure.  This position will be expected to support physical, virtual, and cloud-based computer systems. Candidates should be familiar with both Windows and Linux operating systems. The Systems Administrator must exhibit excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills and possess the ability to work independently while effectively collaborating across organizational teams and program areas.  We seek a skilled professional with strong technical expertise, a demonstrated ability to lead IT related initiatives, and someone with the necessary skills required to support the implementation of IT solutions across the organization. The ideal candidate works well independently with minimal supervision, is a strong team player, hard-working, organized, and able to provide quality support.  

Responsibilities

  • Provides overall support of the RAC’s IT infrastructure, including the installation, configuration, operation, maintenance, deployment, and upgrade of RAC servers, systems hardware, software, VOIP, and other related IT infrastructure.
  • Creates and maintains system documentation of IT processes, procedures, plans, and configurations, including the development of plans and other requirements necessary for the deployment of systems.
  • Actively monitors the service desk to respond and resolve escalated issues.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of systems by researching, testing, and proposing new systems, server technologies, and processes that can improve the current environment.
  • Administers the RAC storage systems (PowerStore, S3, EFS, etc.), virtual environments (VMware, EC2, etc.), active directory, DHCP, Private and Public DNS, and Microsoft Entra. 
  • Manages and maintains MDM environments (Intune, Jamf).
  • Promotes the use of technology across the organization and assists other teams and program areas with technical needs and analysis in the initiation and planning of various technology related projects.  
  • Provides technical expertise across the organization for use of IT systems and software. 

Qualifications

Required

  • B.A. degree in computer science or related technical field and a minimum of 2-4 years of experience in computer operations, systems administration, and user support.
  • Hands-on experience with administering Linux, Windows systems, AWS and Azure.
  • Experience in automating administrative tasks (Ansible, AWS systems manager, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience with networking systems, firewalls, switches, routers, VPN.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and apply computer technology to accomplish work efficiently using appropriate software.
  • Excellent technical, analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining close attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented approach to achieve organizational goals, including the ability to share knowledge and collaborate across teams and program areas.
  • Ability and willingness to take initiative.  

Preferred

  • Knowledge of:
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating systems.
    • Amazon Web Services, (particularly EC2, ELB, WAF, VPC, IaC, S3, ECS, Lambdas, IAM, RDS);
    • Windows Server operating systems, Active Directory; and SAN technologies (SMB, NFS, ISCSI).
    • Knowledge of backup solutions for large storage systems and Virtual Machines (Rubrik).
  • Relevant Certifications:
    • Network+
    • CCNA
    • AWS solutions architect
    • RHCSA

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $88,667-$133,000 per year and is commensurate with experience.

The Rockefeller Archive Center supports a flexible work environment. All flexible work arrangements are determined and approved in advance by the employee’s supervisor and will necessarily vary among different positions. The Systems Administrator may be required to work evenings when deploying systems and/or updates.

Located in Sleepy Hollow, NY, The Rockefeller Archive Center (RAC) was established in 1974 as the result of efforts by the children of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. to gather in one institution the records of their family’s philanthropic work and to stimulate research into the ways in which these philanthropic efforts had impacted the nation and the world. Since that time, the Archive Center has grown substantially, so that it now holds the archives of a large and growing number of philanthropic institutions, including the Ford Foundation, the Knight Foundation, the Hewlett Foundation, and many other foundations and civil society organizations, as well as the papers of individuals associated with these organizations.

In the RAC’s collections, researchers from all over the world can explore topics ranging from the history of medicine, science, and public health to such fields as the arts, agriculture, social sciences, urban affairs, and public policy. The RAC’s stipend program provides support for those who need to travel to the Archive Center for their research, while its rich online resources engage even larger global communities. In addition, the RAC regularly convenes conferences, workshops, and other gatherings to bring diverse communities together to discuss significant issues related to its collections.

The Rockefeller Archive Center is led by a President, Director of Human Resources and Operations, Director of Archives, and Director of Research & Engagement. The IT team is positioned within the Operations program and is led by the Associate Director of Information Technology and includes an IT Coordinator.
