Library Assistant III - Access Services
Description
The Clement C. Maxwell Library is open an average of 87 hours each week during the academic year. It is a busy, dynamic place with classrooms, academic and administrative offices throughout the building. The library serves all BSU students, faculty, staff, researchers from across the country and world, as well as the residents of the surrounding communities.
The Maxwell Library at Bridgewater State University seeks a motivated and collaborative full-time Library Assistant. The full-time Library Assistant III (LA III) reports to the Manager of Access Services and collaborates with colleagues in the Access Services Department to assist patrons at the Maxwell Library’s service desk, as well as over the phone and via online chat. In addition, the LA III will be cross trained to provide other crucial library services, including basic reference support, basic technology support, document delivery backup, collection/compilation of statistical data, and other duties as assigned.
The LA III position tour of duty (i.e., schedule) is as follows:
LA III Schedule
Sunday 2:00pm -10:15pm
Monday – Thursday 3:00pm to 11:15pm.
Friday and Saturday as days off
This is an AFSCME paraprofessional position and is subject to the terms of that union agreement (https://www.mass.edu/shared/collbargaining/AFSCME%202017-2020.pdf).
Essential Duties:
- Serve patrons at our busy service point in all Library related inquiries.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of students from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of abilities.
- Perform a variety of access services tasks and circulation duties as assigned, including checking library material in and out, answering phones, responding to online chats, processing items on-hold for patrons, unpacking and organizing deliveries from our library network.
- Perform start up or closing tasks for specific shifts.
- Answer basic reference and technology questions.
- Perform various inventory control tasks, including re-shelving materials, shelf-reading, assisting with weeding of materials, and book stacks maintenance.
- Assist patrons in the basic use of the library catalog and other online library databases.
- Assist with recruitment, supervision, and training of student workers.
- Create book and resource displays within the library.
- Participate in library and university-wide library outreach efforts.
- Gather, organize, and prepare monthly library service statistics.
- Attend workshops, seminars, and other educational opportunities to enhance job knowledge.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Two years’ experience as a library assistant in an academic library or public library, including at least one year in a supervisory capacity.
- General knowledge of library services and workflows.
- Commitment to customer service excellence/support to enhance an environment of equity, diversity and inclusion.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to deal tactfully with others and provide effective customer service.
- General knowledge of computers and basic skills with Office 365 or other workplace productivity software.
- Experience using library systems and equipment typically found in libraries (i.e., printers, photocopiers, scanners, and other hardware and software).
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods, to bend, stoop, reach and push heavy book carts (up to 40lbs.).
