ABOUT THE POSITION

Under the general supervision of the Head of Library Special Collections + Digital Services, the Metadata + Digital Projects Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of cataloging efforts for the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection, Fashion Resource Center, Textile Resource Center, and other special collections in SAIC Digital Collections. Is responsible for day-to-day tasks related to digitization projects, metadata production, cataloging, file management, data entry, and holdings maintenance in a variety of library systems. Works collaboratively with the Library Special Collections + Digital Services team on general collections management projects.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for cataloging, collection and record maintenance, data entry, and metadata production in multiple systems, as assigned.

  • In collaboration with the Head of Library Special Collections + Digital Services and other SAIC Digital Collections stakeholders, develops and manages digital collections metadata workflows and projects.

  • Classifies Library + Special Collections materials according to the Library of Congress Classification and other metadata schema as needed and appropriate for different types of collections and materials.

  • Contributes to project planning and/or the development of policies and procedures for the Library Special Collections + Digital Services team and, as needed, for Flaxman Library.

  • Works with a variety of systems, digital collection and collection management tools.

  • Assists with metadata creation and data maintenance for digital library projects as assigned.

  • Provides work-related statistics and data to assist with decision-making as needed.

  • Provides assistance to SAIC faculty and students or other image researchers.

  • Responsible for the hiring, training, scheduling, and supervision of student assistants.

  • Trains staff as necessary on application of standard schemas, vocabularies, and tools for digital collections metadata creation.

  • Assists the Library Special Collections + Digital Services team and/or other Flaxman Library staff as needed.

  • Other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Degree in the visual arts, design, or architecture preferred.

  • Two years of experience working with metadata and digital collections required.

  • Supervisory experience a plus

  • Experience working with Drupal or Islandora preferred. 

  • Experience working with digital repositories and library management systems.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging, metadata schemas, standards, tools, and their applications.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of digitization standards.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of data preservation and digital file management practices.

  • Experience with library and archival processes for handling materials.

  • Experience with object-based cataloging practices.

  • Proficiency with standard office hardware and software.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Ability to learn new systems rapidly.
