Description

The Center seeks a full-time in-house web developer to support the Center’s extensive digital projects and programs. The primary initial responsibility is to support the development of the Universal Yiddish Library, a groundbreaking project to digitize nearly all Yiddish books ever published and make them searchable with OCR. This project, already in development, will include opportunities for the candidate to work in the fields of digital humanities, library archiving and cataloging, machine learning and OCR using a wide variety of web technologies and programming languages, such as Python, Java, Drupal, PHP, HTML/SCSS, JavaScript, and other web development tools. The candidate will work with a diverse array of team members within the organization and with external partners.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintenance and development for the Universal Yiddish Library, an aggregated search index of digitized books from multiple institutions with OCR capabilities. Provide maintenance and support for the addition of new collections and features for this major initiative.
  • Work with outside web development vendors as part of a team to manage existing web properties, develop new features, and maintain existing Drupal and custom-built sites.
  • Work with the Director of Web Development to maintain servers related to the Centers’ web projects and properties.
  • Maintain custom harvester and migration scripts (Python) to integrate digital archival collections with the Center’s web properties.
  • Create custom code to integrate internal IT applications (data import and export between multiple applications).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field, or an equivalent combination of skills and experience.
  • HTML, CSS/SCSS, JS (and modern libraries as well as maintaining legacy Jquery), Python, PHP.
  • Databases, e.g. MYSQL.
  • Structured data, e.g. XML, JSON.
  • Experience with Drupal or similar content management systems.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new languages, applications, and work in a diverse array of contexts on cutting-edge digital humanities projects.
  • Interest and experience with digital humanities projects.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of staff, partner organizations, and outside contractors.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Server configuration and management (Apache); Linux CLI; version control (Git).
  • Experience with Lucene search (Solr, Elasticsearch).
  • Amazon web services.
  • Java libraries and applications.
  • Familiarity with desktop database applications like FileMaker and/or Microsoft Access.
  • Knowledge of library cataloging practices and metadata schemas such as MARC, MODS, ALTO.
  • Familiarity with digital preservation and digital archives best practices.
  • Familiarity with non-Roman scripts and/or Hebrew alphabet.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary is variable depending on the level of seniority of the candidate, with a flexible salary range of $60–75K, depending on skills and experience.

We prefer candidates who can work in our office in Amherst, MA but are open to remote candidates with the ability to travel to Amherst at least twice a year as needed.
