Departmental Overview

The Library Information Technology (Library IT) Division, a division within the UC Berkeley Library, is charged with the design, development, management, and maintenance of flexible and reliable technology environments for the Library, specifically: the development and management of digital collections and services and their associated digital discovery and access platforms; creation of digital content; digital preservation tools; the development of a fully accessible and responsive library web presence that applies user experience principles and strategies; the development and support of server-based technologies for the delivery of library services; the maintenance of library management and discovery systems; the management of the library's computing services including desktop support, software, and library labs for library staff and public; and the development and delivery of frameworks and applications to support collaborative storage, delivery, and preservation of information resources. The digital and library technology applications and collections developed and managed by Library IT Division are research vehicles that are used by library patrons ranging from UC Berkeley faculty, students, and staff, other institutions’ faculty and graduate students, and the general public.

Responsibilities

Library Applications, Services, and Systems Analysis:

• Gathers, analyzes and summarizes needs, documenting requirements and improvements or new library systems, applications, and services to meet business and stakeholders needs.
• Develops functional specifications for library system/service/application changes or new projects.
• Oversees library-wide implementation of services and projects, e.g., shared storage, in alignment with Library policies and procedures.
• Recommends and implements changes in Library IT processes and procedures.
• Leads evaluation of third-party applications to meet UCOP, campus, and library policies and best practices.
• Create and maintain detailed technical documentation.

Project, Program, and Service Implementation and Management:

• Develops library programs/services and oversee implementation to meet UCOP and campus requirements, e.g., security, privacy, and disaster recovery. Includes development and implementation of data protection and privacy measures, and adherence to security and compliance standards.
• Manages projects related to the implementation of new library applications/services and enhancements.
• Defines project scope, timelines, and deliverables, and monitor progress to ensure successful completion.
• Leads or participates in cross-functional teams to address complex business or service issues.
• Provides support and training on new applications/services for Library staff.

Professional Development:

• Professional development related to library systems, applications, and services.
• Serves on library and university-wide committees and task forces; participates in local consortia and regional and national associations.
• Continually acquires new knowledge and updates skills to enhance professional performance in all areas of responsibility.
• Keeps abreast of developments, trends, and issues in the library and technology fields.

Miscellaneous Responsibilities:

• Other related duties and projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and prioritize complex library technology projects and services, involving teams.
• Demonstrated ability to analyze operational requirements and assess technology and capacity requirements.
• Demonstrated technology project and service management skills.
• Knowledge and understanding of library technologies and services.
• Demonstrated experience with effectively completing and delivering projects and services, prioritizing based on strategic goals, and meeting deadlines.
• Strong skills and knowledge of methodologies associated with analysis of library technology processes and problems, information flow, and architecture.
• Demonstrated effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Interpersonal and communications skills to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
• Commitment to staying updated on emerging technology trends in libraries especially as related to technologies that affect library services.
• Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds.

Education/Training:

• Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of technology-related initiatives and an understanding of impact to the organization of such initiatives.
• Demonstrated ability to understand and meet requirements with high attention to detail.
• Familiarity with library operations, systems, and technologies.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $80,000.00 - $96,000.00.

• This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
• This position is exempt and paid monthly.
