We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated software developer to join our development team at the Penn State University Libraries. This is an opportunity to lead development on exciting projects as an integral member of a high performing, agile team. You will collaborate with other innovative developers to build sustainable discovery and repository services that support the mission of discovery, access, and preservation for a world-class research library with a global reach.

As a developer with strong coding abilities, problem-solving skills, and real-world experience, you will:

  • Be a positive influence on the team, collaborating proactively with team members, and sharing knowledge across multiple projects
  • Serve as technical lead on applications from design to deployment while balancing interests and requirements from a wide range of stakeholders
  • Contribute to full-stack software development of web applications and their associated test suites
  • Help to improve and shorten our development life cycle.
  • Connect with established open-source communities, such as the Rails and Blacklight communities, and leverage collective strengths
  • Receive support for professional development and skill advancement in the form of training, facilitated code sprints, and conference participation
  • Mentor other developers in areas of technical expertise
     

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher with 4+ years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Enthusiasm to learn new skills and technologies
  • Strong analytical and developer skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, as a team member, and as a member of open-source communities
  • Familiarity with web accessibility guidelines and standards
  • Knowledge of distributed version control systems (e.g., Git) and branching workflows
  • Experience in the development of complex web applications and workflows for multiple users
     

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with command-line environments
  • Familiarity with REST APIs and other web service architecture
  • Familiarity with DevOps and CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience with package management tools
  • Experience with asset bundlers
  • Solid understanding of the MVC design patterns and frameworks (i.e. Ruby on rails or Django)
  • Experience with front-end development; JavaScript frameworks, CSS front-end toolkits, and HTML templates
