Digital Repositories Librarian

The University of Waterloo Library seeks a forward-thinking, motivated, and service-oriented individual to join our team as the Digital Repositories Librarian. Reporting to the Head, Digital Initiatives, the Digital Repositories Librarian will take a leadership role in development, coordination, and promotion of the University of Waterloo’s digital repositories and open access publishing services. Working with developers, the position is responsible for managing repository software. The position also develops and implements content policies and procedures. As Digital Repositories Librarian, the position requires collaboration with liaison and specialist librarians to develop and promote existing (ie. UWSpace, Online Learning Object Repository, Open Journals System) and new digital repositories and open access publishing. This full time, permanent position is suitable for hybrid work. The position is part of the Digital Initiatives department, a small, highly collaborative, user-focused that prioritizes learning and development. The team supports proprietary and open-source software, both locally hosted and cloud-based, to enable research, open access, scholarly communication, and digital scholarship projects.

The Library supports many campus priorities including student wellness, sustainability, and the development of Indigenous initiatives, recognizing the responsibility of truth and reconciliation as outlined in the 94 Calls To Action.

Qualifications

• Experience with digital repositories and content management systems (e.g. Islandora, Drupal, Fedora Commons, DSpace, Dataverse)
• Project management experience with complex digital initiatives involving many stakeholders
• Ability to work effectively and efficiently without direct supervision
• Demonstrated ability to independently, as well as collaboratively, plan, coordinate, and implement effective digital projects, including managing multiple and simultaneous projects
• Demonstrated knowledge of digital preservation standards and best practices
• Proficiency with well-formed XML; strong, demonstrated facility with standards-based non-
• Proficiency with non-MARC metadata (e.g. Dublin Core); ability to investigate, learn, and implement new metadata standards as required
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on projects across a wide range of departments and for varying audiences
• A strong commitment to high quality service
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both oral and written
• Knowledge of digital library, scholarly communications and research data management trends in academic libraries, including open scholarship practices, principles, and mandates
• Knowledge of copyright, intellectual property, fair use, and open licensing in the Canadian context as it relates to scholarly communication and academic publishing
• Knowledge of researcher and research object identification standards

Assets

• Familiarity with Open Access digital scholarship publishing platforms (e.g. Open Journal Systems)
• Intermediate programming and/or system administrator skills; experience working with programmers (e.g., writing spec and use cases)
• Aptitude for adapting to new responsibilities and environments, independent learning and engagement with technology/software, including excellent technical troubleshooting
• Commitment to promoting an atmosphere of diversity, equity, and inclusion
• Leadership capacity and evidence of building effective working relationships with institutional and external colleagues and community stakeholders

Compensation

The salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and qualification within the USG 10-13 salary level. Hiring range: $70,099 - $113,561 based on 2023/2024 salary scales
