Digital Library Software Developer (two positions)
Description
The Digital Library Software Developer will join a team supporting discovery, access, and delivery as part of its digital library, an internationally recognized technology program developing innovative solutions to advance teaching, learning and research at one of the world’s leading universities. As a part of Digital Library Systems and Services (DLSS), this position will contribute to the development of interfaces, tools, and software to enable online discovery and access to the collections of Stanford and its partner institutions. You will also work on other areas across our team’s portfolio and on projects with external partners, working closely with software developers, user experience designers, and service managers. You will work with your colleagues to ensure that our applications and services meet accessibility guidelines and best practices. Developing, using and implementing open standards and open source software will be part of the work of the position.
Reporting to the Associate Director for Software Development, DLSS, this position is part of the Access and Discovery Team within Digital Library Systems and Services (DLSS), the technology division of Stanford Libraries. Including this position, the Access and Discovery Team comprises nine software engineers and user experience designers. We develop, maintain, and support a portfolio of services and applications that support patrons and users at and beyond Stanford University in finding and using materials for research, teaching, and learning. This includes SearchWorks (our library catalog platform), the Stanford Libraries website, Spotlight at Stanford (our online exhibit platform), EarthWorks (our GIS data discovery platform), and other tools that deliver and present digital library content. The Access and Discovery Team values working as a self-directed and unified team, fostering community and collaboration, improving process incrementally through regular retrospectives, and fostering an environment with psychological safety, joy, and humor.
Core Duties:*
● Conceptualize design, implement, and develop solutions for complex digital library access and delivery systems independently.
● Participate in technical planning, development sprints, and work cycles, collaborating with other software engineers, user experience designers, and other colleagues to design, develop, and implement applications.
● Document system builds and application configurations; maintain and update documentation as needed.
● Provide technical analysis, design, development, conversion, and implementation work.
● Work as a project leader, as needed, for projects of moderate complexity and participate in setting technical strategy on new and emerging programmatic areas.
● Serve as a technical resource for applications.
● Compare, evaluate, and implement new features and technologies, and integrate them into the computing environment.
● Help set software development practices and processes
● Mentor lower level software developers.
● Understand and follow software development practices and processes, including security procedures.
● Contribute in a positive way to team culture.
At the level of Software Developer 3, the position will additionally:
● Propose, conceptualize, design, implement, and develop solutions for difficult and complex applications independently.
● Oversee testing, debugging, change control, and documentation for major projects.
● Engage in long-term strategic planning, including leading technical strategy on new and emerging programmatic areas.
● Define complex application development administration and programming standards.
● Oversee the support, maintenance, operation, and upgrades of applications.
● Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical problems.
● Review the physical design of existing systems for optimizing performance.
● Lead projects, as necessary, for special systems and application development in areas of complex problems, including serving as technical lead for large projects, setting technical direction, breaking down work into components, and partnering with service managers, product owners, and other stakeholders.
● Work with other technical professionals to develop standards and implement best practices.
● Think broadly across the organization about impacts on analysis and implementation and collaborate with software developers and other technical staff across teams and departments.
● Set, lead and model software development practices, team culture and processes.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
To qualify at Software Developer 2 level:
Education & Experience:
● Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
● Expertise in designing, developing, testing, and deploying applications.
● Demonstrated experience in digital library applications or related application domains strongly desired.
● Proficiency with application design and data modeling.
● Ability to define and solve logical problems for highly technical applications.
● Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical clients.
● Ability to facilitate activities on structured team development projects.
● Ability to select, adapt, and effectively use a variety of programming methods.
Other Relevant Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities May Include:
● Relevant experience may include experience in one or more of the following areas:
○ digital library, digital humanities projects, data analysis, or data transformation
○ visualization, search/browse, geospatial information systems, or other discovery interfaces
○ image processing or streaming media, such as through the International Image Interoperability Framework
● Strong knowledge of more than one programming language, including Ruby or JavaScript. Prior experience with Ruby on Rails or comparable web frameworks are strongly desired.
● Understanding of IT security and expertise in proactively applying considerations to all aspects of position.
To qualify at Software Developer 3 level:
Education & Experience:
● Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience..
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
● Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies and programming tools.
● Demonstrated experience in designing, developing, testing, and deploying applications
● Strong understanding of data design, architecture, relational databases, and data modeling.
● Thorough understanding of all aspects of software development life cycle and quality control practices.
● Ability to define and solve logical problems for highly technical applications.
● Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical clients.
● Demonstrated experience leading activities on structured team development projects.
● Ability to select, adapt, and effectively use a variety of programming methods.
● Ability to recognize and recommend needed changes in user and/or operations procedures.
Other Relevant Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities May Include:
● Relevant experience may include one of or more of the following areas:
○ digital library, digital humanities projects, data analysis, or data transformation
○ visualization, search/browse, or other discovery interfaces
○ image processing or streaming media, such as through the International Image Interoperability Framework
● Demonstrated experience with supporting digital library projects or programs, or comparable experience in related sectors or domains is strongly desired.

Physical Requirements:
● Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.

This remote role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States. Stanford University has five Regional Pay Structures .The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate.
The expected pay range for this position is:
Level 2: $98,000 to $144,000 per Annum.
Level 3: $136,000 to $171,000 per Annum.
Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
