Associate Research Scholar

Description

The Center for Spatial Research (CSR) at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) seeks applications for a full-time Associate Research Scholar. The Associate Research Scholar will focus on generating, analyzing, and visualizing spatial data for the Mapping Historical New York project. A Master’s degree in Architecture, Data Science, Urban Planning, Computational Design, Geography, Historical GIS, Landscape Architecture or a closely related field is required. We invite applications from candidates with a strong interest in interdisciplinary work whose research practices combine techniques of data science, historical research, and GIS-based methods. This appointment may start as early as July 1, 2023, will be up to one year, and is renewable contingent on satisfactory performance and available funding. 

The position will report to the Director of CSR and will be part of a collaborative, cross-disciplinary project team between CSR and the Department of History. The incumbent will work closely with the Project Lead and Principal Investigators to: develop methodologies for historical geographic information systems research, including standardizing, linking, and geocoding census records; participate in writing and creating maps and visualizations for papers and other publications in journal and multimedia formats; contribute to the project’s Digital Atlas; and develop teaching materials related to this research.

Successful candidates will have robust experience in GIS-based research including some experience with historical GIS research and must have experience and interest in using GIS-based research practices to open up new questions in, and modes of representation of, urban environments. They will also have experience in data science and methodology design as well as in a range of other computational tools for research. The Center’s projects typically draw on multiple tools including R; Python; Adobe Creative Suite; mapping and visualization libraries such as Leaflet, Processing, D3, APIs, HTML5, CSS, and Javascript.

Hiring Salary Range: $68,000 - $71,000
