Western Carolina University’s Hunter Library seeks an enthusiastic and highly qualified librarian to develop and lead its Access, Research, and Instruction Services (ARIS) Department. As part of the library-wide learning mission, the department facilitates the discovery and use of intellectual content by the university’s students, faculty, and staff. The head of ARIS is responsible for: departmental strategic planning, budgeting, and management, including coordinating and guiding recruitment, program review and assessment, mentoring and performance evaluation, and overseeing the collegial and peer review process; developing, coordinating and assessing innovative and proactive research services; overseeing the instruction and information literacy program; collaborating with library and academic departments to develop information services; and serving as a member of the library-wide leadership team. The successful candidate will: be responsive to user needs and services in an academic library environment and serve as a mentor, manager, and leader to the staff and faculty in ARIS; be current with technology and emerging trends; participate in departmental and library-wide committees and work groups and function in a full range of professional departmental responsibilities such as collection development, instruction, and reference services; remain professionally informed and pursue the discovery of new knowledge related to the field of librarianship through scholarship; seek opportunities for professional service; fully embrace the library’s guiding principles; and be empathetic, flexible, and act with integrity.
 

Research and Instruction, the Scholar Studio, the Curriculum Materials Center, and Access Services comprise the ARIS department and include 9 faculty and 10 staff positions. The head of ARIS reports to the dean of library services and will directly supervise all departmental faculty and 1 staff member and will also have access to one shared administrative support associate. This is a 12-month, tenured/tenure track position. The department head will serve a 3-year term of service, with the possibility of renewal. At the end of their term, they will assume Research and Instruction faculty responsibilities.
