There is currently one full-time, overtime-exempt Associate Dean of Library Operations position available on the Olympia Campus of The Evergreen State College. This position is an “at-will” appointment, exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules and the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime requirements.

Salary is $5,179 to $5,956 per month of full time work.
Experience and training may be considered in salary placement.

Under administrative direction, the Associate Dean for Library Operations manages daily operations of the Library, assuring effective, efficient general services and responsive support of the instructional role of the larger organization. This position manages the operational and service side of the library, working collaboratively with the instructional team within an alternative interdisciplinary liberal arts environment.  It provides general oversight of circulation, interlibrary loan, collection care and management, archives, technical services, security and building safety.  This position provides personnel and budget oversight, assists the Dean in identifying and planning strategic initiatives consonant with instructional agendas, maintains awareness of contemporary trends in information technology and academic librarianship generally, and represents the Library in library consortia and professional organizations.

Subordinate Summaries
Direct Reports:

Head of Circulation (Program Manager B): Assures effective access to materials and collections.
Head of Acquisitions (Library and Archives Paraprofessional 6): Monographic purchasing.  Manages $250,000 annual book budget and workflow associated with purchasing, based on direction from subject selectors.  Assures auditing and other legal requirements are met for expenditure regulations.
Head of Serials & Electronic Resources (Library and Archives Paraprofessional 6): Electronic Resources acquisition and management (.5 FTE). Manages $315,300 serials budget based on direction from subject selectors.  Purchases and tracks usage of serials collections, primarily electronic, assures appropriate online access.  Advises subject selectors on developments in electronic publishing, monitors budget.
Head of Technical Processing (Library and Archives Paraprofessional 6): Processing materials for the collection (2.5 FTE). Manages the process of receiving and processing materials so that they can be appropriately organized and located through the Library catalog.
Cataloging Librarian: Creates original cataloging for materials added to the collection when appropriate cataloging from other sources is not available.
CLIO System Manager: Manages Library computer systems (Library catalog, circulation system and interlibrary loan system) which support consortial partnerships.
Library Archivist: Manages College Archives and records management function.

This position has responsibility for maintaining awareness of the instructional function of the college and Library within a distinctive pedagogical context to assure that operational decisions support the organizational mission.  At the same time, this position requires attention to developments externally in the profession and in fields associated with information technology so that the organization can take advantage of service improvements and efficiencies which will support that mission.  Because the instructional and reference functions of the Library organization will be outside this position’s purview, the position requires very strong skills in collaboration.  In the immediate future, this position will manage transition to an Ex Libris integrated library system shared with the Orbis-Cascade Alliance of academic libraries in the Pacific Northwest.  The transition will create opportunities for the reconfiguration of some work flow and job duties in the areas managed by this position.


Masters in Library Science (ALA accredited) or equivalent. 
Four years recent experience managing major functions in libraries.
Broad experience and expertise across a range of library services and operations.
Substantial experience in technical services, library systems, and/or collection management.


Manage all Library services and operations other than instruction, reference and media services, including personnel management, budgets, planning, and policy development and adherence.
Develop, maintain, and clearly communicate vision, priorities, and outcome expectations for Library Operations staff within the instructional priorities and mission of the larger Library organization.
Supervise and oversee all activities of the Library operations staff.
Manage the transition to an Ex Libris integrated library system.
Maintain current Performance Development Plans (PDPs) for staff reporting directly to the position, and assure PDPs are kept current by supervisors reporting to this position.  Assure active staff development across the operation.  Seek out valuable educational opportunities for staff to enhance and broaden their level of expertise and their knowledge of the academic context for their services.
Meet consistently with the Library and media instructional team and the Library administrative team to stay apprised of projects, priorities, and service requirements throughout the larger Library organization.
Consult with the Library instructional team and Library administration when considering service changes, developments, or reductions to assure consistency with institutional goals.
Assure consistency between specific Library operations and the instructional role of the larger Library organization as determined by the Dean of Library and the Library instructional team.
Manage the Library Operations budget to assure the best possible use of resources in meeting institutional priorities.
Assure that up-to-date Library policies and procedures are posted and easily found on the Library web pages.
Maintain current awareness of professional standards and best practices of the profession of librarianship, and seek service improvements and efficiencies appropriate to the larger mission of the Library.
Represent the Evergreen Library in library consortia, professional organizations, fundraising organizations, and other external groups.
Participate in college-wide committees, advocating for and fostering a collaborative working relationship between Library operations and the larger Library and college organization.
Work on specialized and/or complex projects.


Serve as Acting Dean as requested in the absence of the Dean of Libraries.
Serve as a Reference Librarian as assigned.


Expertise in managing complex library organizations, including organizational change, human resources, budgeting, planning, and policy implementation.
Knowledge of professional academic library practices across all library services and functions.
Excellent skill and ability in supervising the work of others.
Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues focused more directly on the curriculum and academic mission in order to assure strong agreement between instructional practices and library operations.
Ability to provide for smooth, effective library service to the college community and other patrons.
Ability and skill in team-building and fostering effective communication and collaborations across significant differences and with people with broadly varying technical skill levels.
In-depth knowledge and ability in academic library planning, implementation, policy development, and best practices.
