Director of Distinctive Collections and Digital Scholarship


The Claremont Colleges Services (TCCS) is the central coordinating and support organization for a highly regarded cluster of seven independent colleges known as The Claremont Colleges. TCCS with a staff of 300, provides exceptional shared services to 9,000 students, and almost 3,600 faculty and staff. TCCS staff work in both student-facing services as well as administrative and operational services. Our numerous departments are located throughout The Claremont Colleges campus in the beautiful city of Claremont, California.




The Claremont Colleges Services seeks a diversely experienced and talented library professional for the position of Director for Distinctive Collections and Digital Scholarship at The Claremont Colleges Library (TCCL).


The Director of Distinctive Collections and Digital Scholarship (DCDS) will bring a deep understanding of the major strategies, opportunities, challenges and trends facing academic libraries today in the areas of open publishing, data and digital scholarship, the curation of digital assets, and the enhancement of research, teaching and learning through special collections and archives. The successful candidate in this position will show an understanding of the relationship between traditional special collections and current digital initiatives taking place at The Claremont Colleges Library (TCCL), a vibrant, innovative and inclusive center for research, teaching, learning, and scholarship serving students, faculty and staff of The Claremont Colleges community.


The position is responsible for articulating a vision of the application of digital strategies to preserve, enhance and expand access to distinctive print-based collections and primary source materials. This position is also responsible for building awareness of and support for digital archives and digital repositories as well as examining strategies for the ongoing growth and stewardship of the Claremont Colleges Digital Library (CCDL) and the mailto:Scholarship@Claremont institutional repository. In addition to supervisory responsibilities for TCCL's Digital Initiatives Coordinator and Digital Production Lead, the position has oversight over three main units within the newly-formed DCDS division: Digital Scholarship, Scholarly Communications and Open Publishing and Special Collections and Archives. The distinctive and unique collections of the Asian Library are also included within this division.


Reporting to the Dean of The Claremont Colleges Library, and serving as a member of the Library's senior leadership team, this position requires a capacity to thrive and respond effectively to the changing, and unique, needs of The Claremont Colleges, a distinctive consortium comprised of five undergraduate colleges and two graduate institutions located forty miles from Los Angeles in the college town of Claremont, California. The Library is a member of the Oberlin Group of Libraries, the HathiTrust, the Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA), the Center for Research Libraries (CRL) and SCELC. It is one of eighteen main service departments of The Claremont Colleges Services (TCCS) which is the central support organization for The Claremont Colleges. The Claremont Colleges Services Library Staff Federation (AFT Local 6735) represents the majority of professional and paraprofessional staff within the Library.


Specific duties include:


• Represents the DCDS division on the Library Leadership Team and plays a key leadership role in library planning and implementation of the library's strategic initiatives. Creates and articulates a transformative vision for the future of DCDS within the broader context of these initiatives.


• Works closely with Library leadership colleagues on cross-divisional communication and data-informed decision-making.


• Collaborates with internal and external partners to develop an innovative, customized set of research, teaching, and learning services for the colleges.


• Working with the division's leadership group, identifies and anticipates emerging trends in special collections and archives, scholarly communications, library publishing, digital scholarship, and digital collections as well as the needs of user communities in order to plan, implement, and assess services.


• In close cooperation with the Dean of the Library and advancement offices on the campuses, represents the Library in donor relations, fundraising and other related high level stakeholder and outreach-oriented activities.


• Provides leadership and advocacy for the continued development of, and engagement with, the library's distinctive collections across subjects and formats, including a programmatic strategy for the Library's digital collections.


• Employs a solid service ethic and coordinates with peers on common research support model for all public service desks within the library.


• Helps facilitate public service librarians' use of primary sources in the classroom and engagement with digital scholarship, data science, and scholarly communications issues.


• With the Associate Director of Library Communications & Outreach, develops messaging and publicity relating to DCDS resources, services, projects, and programs, including utilization of the Library's web and social media presence.


• Provides strong, supportive leadership, supervision, and mentorship for divisional staff and foster their professional engagement and growth.


• Actively represents the library in professional associations; maintains currency with new and emerging standards and best practices in the field; shares knowledge and expertise within the division and with other colleagues.


Work Schedule: The regular hours for this full-time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. May be required to work holiday, weekend, and/or evening hours. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the organization or business unit.

Pay: The monthly salary for this position is competitive and commensurate with the duties, responsibilities, and qualifications required for the position.

Education: You have ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS or equivalent education and experience.


Experience: You have:


• Minimum of five years of experience in an academic or research library and demonstrated evidence of progressively increasing scope of responsibility.


• Demonstrated supervisory experience of staff and responsibility in developing services and programs related to special collections and archives, digital humanities, and/or digital scholarship.


• Experience in supervision, including organizing workloads, delegating responsibility, providing guidance and direction, monitoring and evaluating performance, and coaching.


• Grant writing experience.


• Experience with outreach to faculty and academic program leaders on campus.

• Close understanding of the academic library's role in teaching, learning, and research and the incorporation of primary source materials into the curriculum. Understanding of the scholarly communications landscape and open access initiatives.


• Demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) initiatives including staff training, recruitment and retention strategies and student success.


• Commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment and workplace and ability to work with a diverse student and faculty population.


• Ability to work with other senior leadership members to articulate strategic priorities and vision for The Claremont Colleges Library and to provide leadership to achieve organizational goals.


• Demonstrated understanding of, and receptiveness to, established, new, and emerging technologies in delivering content and innovative services in academic libraries.


• Demonstrated leadership and analytical skills, creative and innovative problem-solving skills, and a strong commitment to service excellence.


• Ability to be proactive, flexible, and collaborative as a leader and senior administrator to accomplish strategic goals and priorities.


• Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.


• Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively at all levels of the organization. Demonstrated skills in promoting teamwork and collegiality among colleagues.


• Commitment to service and contributions to the profession as demonstrated by a record of participation in national professional associations and presentations at the local and national level.
