Audiovisual Digitization Specialist

Position Summary

Reporting to the Digitization Manager, the Audiovisual Digitization Specialist is responsible for all in-house audio-visual digitization, and provides quality control and editing for outsourced digitization of audiovisual materials in the Washington University Libraries' collections. The position provides expertise that informs strategies for long-term preservation of and access to these digital assets and their analog counterparts.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Oversees the creation of digital surrogates for audiovisual materials, including advanced editing to restore, rebuild, and/or remaster recordings as appropriate for licensing and reference requests. Ensures consistent use of quality control guidelines and established digitization standards.
• Maintains, configures, and calibrates the equipment, hardware, and software used in the digitization of audiovisual materials; troubleshoots and problem-solves to achieve the highest quality and efficiency. Establishes and follows digital production workflows and guidelines, and maintains shared documentation for project and program-based work.
• Works with Preservation, Library Technology Services & Digital Library Program Services staff to develop and enact policies and procedures for long-term preservation, storage and migration of digital audio-visual materials.
• Works closely with various departments and collecting units, both within the libraries and across the University, to identify and prioritize digitization needs. Participates in library-wide and university-wide activities, committees, special projects and programs, as assigned.
• Remains current with trends and developments in the preservation and access of digital and analog audio-visual formats, as well as file transfer and management systems.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

• Normal office environment.
• Ability to lift up to 40lb.
• Occasional travel to other WUSTL locations.
• Must be able to work in an environment containing possible dust and mold.
• Some off-campus travel may be required in support of professional development or as part of assigned job duties.

Preferred Qualifications

• Academic or library experience.
• Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work successfully in an intensely collaborative environment with a broad range of people from culturally diverse backgrounds including colleagues, administrators, students, faculty, donors, and alumni.
• Excellent organization skills and effectiveness in balancing multiple assignments and projects.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s Degree or graduate level certificate in moving image archives, library & information science, film studies, or other related degree.
• Experience working with audio/video formats and files, digitization of linear media, and editing digital media.
• Previous archival education or experience.
• Experience working with digital video and audio equipment, files and formats, and compression codecs.
• Experience with advanced editing software such as Audacity and Premier Pro.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
