The Boston Athenæum seeks a personable and reliable intern for the IT Department who will play an important role in supporting the daily function of Library and IT technologies across the library. Reporting to the Systems Librarian and the Assistant Systems Administrator, the intern will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience with IT and Systems Librarian duties, as well as library technologies including the Athenæum’s Integrated Library System, Special Collections request management software, digital collections management software, and website.
The ideal candidate will be someone who has good interpersonal skills, likes learning about technology and has a good foundation in it, and is comfortable with troubleshooting problems. This position will be available to start in July and will run for 6 weeks.
Hours: About 20 hours per week, with flexible scheduling (occasional weekend shifts may be required).
Compensation:$18 per hour; paid sick time; free membership concurrent with employment and one year following the date of departure.
RESPONSIBILITIES
IT Helpdesk support, including hardware, software, and network troubleshooting.
Assist in configuration and troubleshooting of library systems and software.
Make minor updates to the website.
Install and update software on staff computers as needed.
Move computers and set up new computers.
Help maintain the IT inventory.
Assist with A/V setup for presentations.
Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications:
Submit to and pass a background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment verifications and Registry of Motor Vehicles (if applicable).
Must be currently enrolled in an ALA accredited library science graduate program.
Must be proficient with Windows 10.
Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.
Must be able to lift and move 40 pounds.
Completion of technology course(s) preferred.
Experience with HTML/CSS preferred.
Networking experience including familiarity with wired and wireless technologies preferred.
Computer Hardware (especially internals such as how to install a hard drive) preferred.
