Data Technology Specialist
Description
Under the direction of the Senior Manager, Data Analysis & Integration (DAI) within Knowledge Access & Resource Management Services (KARMS), the Data Technology Specialist will analyze new requests, evaluate, document and help implement tasks and projects in collaboration with senior DAI members and various KARMS departments such as Resource Management, Knowledge Access, and Archival Collections Management. Assist in the execution of various projects that will analyze and quantify risk, develop improvements and sustain efficiency and effectiveness across different functional areas. They will also Participate in workflow analysis and assist in the development and maintenance of automation processes, configurations, documentation, and reports. In consultation with KARMS department heads and supervisors, implement a coordinated strategy for NYU Libraries’ print and electronic collections, including overseeing catalog record supply chains, multiple processing streams, and knowledge base management activities. Work on a wide variety of projects that support business needs and improvement opportunities. Provide a support role in projects for the Libraries’ LSP (Library Services Platform) and its related workflows and help develop applications, including programs for transforming and analyzing metadata.
Required Education:
Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's degree in computer science, information science, library science, or related field.
Required Experience:
3+ years Minimum of 3 years related experience or combination of education and experience; demonstrated experience in developing and implementing complex workflows; Experience in processing bibliographic records for acquisitions and cataloging workflows; experience performing data analysis on a variety of data formats; Experience doing concrete data manipulation using regular expressions, understanding and manipulating XML, conducting basic UNIX text manipulation and analysis, preparing YAML config files, executing large global edits, as well as creating and analyzing data using Tableau.
Preferred Experience:
3+ years Large scale Acquisitions workflow understanding including concepts around orders/invoices. Experience with one or more of the suite of Ex Libris products (Primo, Alma, Aleph, SFX); experience with library discovery and access systems in an academic or research library; experience working with metadata knowledge bases such as OCLC WorldCat and WorldShare, Alma Community Zone, Ex Libris CDI or Ebsco EDS; experience writing scripts in common scripting languages such as Perl, PHP, bash, Python, or Ruby; experience with XML and XSLT; experience working in Linux/Unix server environments. Knowledge of database architecture and SQL
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Working knowledge of bibliographic records in compliance with content standards such as RDA and AACR2 and encoding standards such as MARC; ability to communicate knowledge of these standards and collaborate with stakeholders on issues pertaining to them; excellent analytical, communication and interpersonal skills; excellent planning and organizational skills; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and establish appropriate priorities; ability to work productively on cross-departmental teams. Demonstrated ability to document workflows and teach others.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of metadata standards, including MARC and Dublin Core; knowledge of library technology protocols such as OAI-PMH, Z39.5-, and SRU/W; experience with Lucene/Solr; experience with utilizing third party APIs to harness data.
