Education Liaison Librarian

The George Washington University Libraries seek collaborative, technologically capable, user-focused applicants for the position of Education Liaison Librarian. The position is responsible for direct outreach to the Graduate School of Education and Human Development (GSEHD), including the departments of Curriculum and Pedagogy, Educational Leadership, International Education, Human and Organizational Learning, and Special Education and Disability Studies.

Liaison librarians proactively develop partnerships with faculty to develop and deliver value-added services as well as new methods of delivering existing services to support the University’s research and teaching initiatives. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work in a complex, changing environment with a positive, flexible, and innovative attitude, and he or she will have a proven capacity to work effectively and collegially in teams with staff at all levels as well as with faculty and students.

The Graduate School of Education offers programs at the main campus of the University (Foggy Bottom) as well as at four additional locations in Virginia (Ashburn, Alexandria, Arlington, and Hampton Roads).

Responsibilities include: providing discipline-based research and technology assistance through individual and small group consultations and online user support; creating programs, services, and collections for GW’s education community that will advance the research enterprise and foster a climate of scholarly inquiry and student achievement; teaching curriculum-integrated instructional sessions at all degree levels; collaborating with teaching faculty to develop course content; participating in assessing student learning; creating online tools and user guides; helping to shape new directions for development and access to education collections; and working in a team environment with a focus on continuously enhancing the user experience.

In collaboration with the other members of the Reference, Instruction, and Collection Development teams, the incumbent will be expected to contribute significantly to the planning, development, provision, and assessment of a cohesive program of library services, reference, collections, and strategic information literacy initiatives for the library. As a member of the Instruction team, the incumbent will also contribute to the development and delivery of an active and nationally recognized freshman writing program. Representing GW Libraries in the academic and professional community, and maintaining professional networks and collaborative relationships with other libraries, the Education Liaison Librarian remains current with trends in education librarianship and assumes an active leadership and advocacy role within the field.

Some evening/weekend hours and travel are required. Although based at the Gelman Library on the main campus, regular service at the Ashburn location, and close collaboration with the Distance Education Librarian will be expected of the incumbent. This position will serve on library and university committees, which provides unique opportunities to promote GW’s Library services across all campuses. The position reports to the Coordinator of the Education and Instruction Group, and receives direction and feedback from the Head of Collection Development.

Minimum Qualifications:
ALA-accredited MLS.

Teaching experience or experience in instructional design in a higher education, library, or secondary education setting.

Relevant undergraduate or graduate degree or significant experience as a library liaison to a university Education Department.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Academic library experience with research assistance and information literacy instruction.

Experience in developing working partnerships with academic departments and other campus communities.

Experience building research level collections to support academic programs.

Experience working with and assisting others in using education/social sciences datasets in support of research.

Experience assisting students and faculty with the use of multimedia tools to support “digitial writing” Evidence of energy, creativity, initiative and commitment to professional growth.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Understanding of current trends and issues in scholarly publishing and communication in Education.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues in a collaborative team-based organization; and flexibility in adapting to change.
