Description
The NC State University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Lead Librarian for Metadata Technologies in the Acquisitions and Discovery department. Acquisitions and Discovery’s 7 librarians and 16 staff are responsible for managing the Libraries’ approximately $12 million collections budget, acquiring materials in all formats, negotiating license agreements and contracts, and describing and maintaining access points to facilitate discovery of the Libraries’ resources. Acquisitions and Discovery librarians have been actively involved in the development of an e-resource management system, E-Matrix, and they contribute to the Libraries’ internationally recognized innovations in content management and discovery.
Responsibilities
The Lead Librarian for Metadata Technologies manages the department’s Data Projects & Partnerships Unit to set priorities, supervise unit staff, manage projects, develop workflows, and train staff. This position manages a team of 5 staff that apply traditional cataloging and acquisitions as well as database design and programming expertise to a growing array of projects that include enhancing discovery of collections materials on the open web, building efficient tools for the acquisition of library collections, collaborating with other Libraries departments to build high-quality data and enhance discovery of library services, and working with researchers to find the best metadata schema for their research endeavors. The Lead Librarian will guide the skills development of each staff member to achieve unit goals, contribute to program success, and advance their growth and development. The incumbent identifies emerging trends and technologies in metadata management and contributes to the planning and implementation of current and future discovery and retrieval services. They provide oversight of metadata consulting and project analysis services including data modeling, data transformation, data creation, database design, and application of semantic web technologies. This position manages database maintenance operations in Libraries discovery systems and leads data control activities related to data quality, authority control, and batch loading. The position will promote and maintain collaborative relationships with partners across the Libraries to foster improved metadata practices and will maintain close working relationships with content providers, vendors, and consortial partners. The Lead Librarian participates in library planning and serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams. Librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field.
Minimum salary: $76,000 annually. Review of applications is underway; position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found. The Libraries will be flexible during this time and will conduct most or all of this search remotely.
