Loyola University Chicago (Loyola) seeks nominations and applications to identify user-focused, collaborative, and forward-thinking candidates for the position of Research and Learning Librarian, Subject Specialist for Business and Communication. This position will serve as library liaison for the School of Communication and the Quinlan School of Business; develop, deliver, and assess instruction and other information literacy initiatives; consult with and provide support for student and faculty researchers throughout the research lifecycle; and identify, acquire, and promote scholarly resources to support curricular and research needs. Both schools offer degree programs in a range of disciplines, including advertising and public relations, communication studies, and multimedia journalism in the School of Communication, and economics, finance, information systems, management, and marketing in the Quinlan School of Business. This position also supports general research and learning needs of the university, including information literacy instruction for first year students, and participates in other library programming and information services.

This is a non-tenured, open-rank, library faculty position with opportunities for promotion.  This position is an excellent opportunity for either a new librarian who is eager to learn on the job, and develop expertise in a range of professional domains or a librarian with several years of experience, who is looking to apply their well-developed skills and knowledge in a thriving academic and professional community.  Librarians work in a collegial and supportive environment, where individual discovery and exploration is balanced with teamwork and collaboration. The successful candidate will be based at the Water Tower campus in the Gold Coast neighborhood but will serve users at all campus locations. In addition to working with library colleagues at Lewis Library, the person in this position will have frequent opportunities to collaborate with librarians and staff at the Lake Shore campus in Rogers Park. Reporting to the Head of Lewis Library, the Research and Learning Librarian, Subject Specialist for Business and Communication will:

  • Provide research, learning, and engagement support to the School of Communication and the Quinlan School of Business, including course-integrated instruction, skills-building workshops, research consultations, and collection development.
  • Contribute to Research and Learning Services Department projects and initiatives, including campus and community outreach, creating research guides and instructional materials, advising on the development of library discovery tools, and staffing information desks and services.
  • Provide library and information literacy instruction for university programs including first year writing, honors program, and undergraduate research initiatives.
  • Work autonomously and collaboratively to meet strategic goals, while consistently promoting teamwork, respect, diversity, and inclusiveness.
  • Participate in library and university committee work.
    Actively contribute to the broader profession through scholarship and service.
  • Other duties to support outreach and engagement as assigned.

Required qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science program, or a graduate degree in a related field, combined with relevant library experience.
  • Experience providing library instruction and research support, or equivalent experience with teaching, public speaking, or customer support.
  • Coursework and/or experience with key information resources in a variety of subjects relevant to Business Administration and Communication. These may include Factiva, ABI/Inform, SimplyAnalytics, or other specialized tools for company information, industry research, target market data, and public data sources.
    Demonstrated ability to learn new tools and skills to support diverse research methods.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills

  • Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population.

Preferred qualifications

  • Additional advanced degree in a related field or demonstrated subject knowledge and familiarity with the research methodologies of Business Administration and/or Communication.
  • Experience providing support and instruction in one or more of these research disciplines: communications research, company and organization research, industry research, market research, finance research, economic and regional research, advertising research, accounting and auditing research, tax research, and legal research.
    Knowledge of collection development and management practices in academic libraries.
  • Knowledge of research data management policies and practices.
  • Experience with tools for data analysis.
    Understanding and appreciation of key information literacies, including critical literacy, data literacy, media literacy, visual literacy, and data ethics.
