Purpose of Position: This position is part of a 2 year fellowship program. The Systems Librarian (Web and Digital Initiatives) is responsible for the technical leadership, management and development of UT Arlington Libraries, portfolio of websites, digital collections, web applications and other innovative digital initiatives.
Essential Functions: Provide vision and leadership in designing, developing and supporting the Libraries, main website and integrating it with the larger library web presence which includes discovery tools, digital collections, electronic resources and other web services; Write advanced web authoring code and develop databases that dynamically deliver content for the Libraries multiple websites and digital collections; Incorporate appropriate technologies that maintain, refine and enhance existing web services. Evaluate web services and resources through a variety of assessment methods; Identify, develop and implement new web applications and tools, particularly for mobile environments; Ensure that current and new web services and applications meet the needs of targeted user groups, such as distance education students, on-site patrons, faculty members, and library staff. Gather and document business and user requirements and conduct process analysis to create functional and technical specifications to create web services and applications that meet the needs of user community; Develop functional prototypes for new digital library initiatives that emphasize performance, sustainability and usability. Anticipates future trends in emerging digital technologies and maintains awareness of and engagement with trends, best practices, and developments in open source, website and mobile technologies. Actively explore new and emerging technologies, recommending and implementing best practices for an academic library environment. Advise both the Digital Program Committee and the Web Advisory Committee as required. Provide second level technical support to resolve issues relating to the Libraries main website, digital collections, web applications and other web services. Serves as the primary contact for developing, maintaining and troubleshooting structured data forms and workflow in Cascade Server and contacting the Office of Information Technology with unresolvable issues. Works closely with: Digital Library Services; Library Systems in administering the Libraries web servers and the MySQL and the database platform; the Office of Information Technology who provide systems administration, support and access to the University's Content Management System, Cascade Server. Collaborates with the Libraries Leadership Team, Digital Program Committee, Special Collections, the University Archivist and other UT Arlington Library staff and campus personnel to maximize access to and use of the Libraries digital collections and other web services through creative web design that improves the users discovery experience, as well as working on the assessment and usability of the Libraries websites, digital collections and other web services. Attends and presents at professional meetings and conferences related to web and digital initiatives.
Marginal/Incidental functions: Provides professional support in the Digital Media Studio as roistered; Initiate and maintain positive communication and collaborative opportunities with colleagues locally and throughout the country; Other functions as assigned.
Required qualifications: Recent graduate from a ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information science. Experience in designing, developing, and supporting web sites. Experience in writing advanced web authoring code (XML, XSLT, SQL, PHP, (X)HTML, CSS, Java/JSP and JavaScript). Experience in relational database design, development and administration (MS Access and MySQL) Experience with or knowledge of project management/coordination. Familiarity of working in a UNIX operating environment. Familiarity with mobile web development and/or responsive web design. Demonstrated flexibility, collegiality and initiative. Strong technical leadership skills. Strong commitment to user-centered services and service excellence. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Superior oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and meet goals within tight time-frames. Demonstrated ability to influence, negotiate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of colleagues, faculty and students.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in working in an academic Library or an academic environment. Experience with a content management system (CMS), Cascade Server preferred. Knowledge of user interface design and usability testing. Knowledge of current and emerging trends in open source, website and mobile technologies. Working conditions: May work around standard office conditions. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Climbing of stairs. Lifting and moving. Use of high-end personal workstations and standard office equipment is required. The DLS team is located in the basement of the Central Library. Criminal background check conducted.
