Seton Hall University Libraries seeks a forward-thinking, collaborative and data savvy librarian to serve as our Acquisitions and Metadata Librarian, providing oversight for acquisitions, collection development, and metadata services. Oversee and manage all aspects of the acquisition and receipt of print and electronic library resources and the creation, maintenance, and enrichment of metadata representing the University Libraries electronic and physical collections, leading and supervising a team of three staff members. This is a probationary (tenure-eligible) position working closely with the Assistant Dean, Collection Services and Information Technologies.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Acquisitions: Supervise daily operations for firm and standing order acquisitions in print and electronic formats. Monitor service contracts and license agreements. Ensure invoices are submitted for payment in a timely manner. Track expenditures, vendor payments, encumbrances, and status of orders. 

  • Collection Development: Oversee an efficient and effective selection of materials in all formats, working closely with staff, liaisons, faculty, donors, consortia, publishers, and vendors. Track, adapt and adopt best practices for collection development. Lead University Libraries’ Collection Development Committee in the selection and approval of library electronic resources and application of Collection Development Policy. 

  • Fiscal Planning: Ensure the effective and appropriate use of all funds in a materials budget of about $2 million. Create and maintain budget strategies for the general collection, e.g., reductions, use of new gifts and resources, integration of ILL and Acquisition workflows, shifting funds to meet shifting collection needs. 

  • Metadata/Cataloging: Oversee cataloging functions for all physical collections for the Walsh, Seminary, and IHS libraries. Create, adapt, and implement new metadata protocols so that items can be easily searched and found in increasingly sophisticated digital catalogs and digital libraries. Develop and implement efficient workflows for maintenance of bibliographic, holdings, and item records. Manage workflow for original and difficult cataloging records with subject matter experts. 

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited degree program. Second master’s degree, scholarly activity and service will be required for tenure. 

  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience working with metadata and library finances in an academic environment. Knowledge of accounting principles with respect to library acquisitions. 

  • Demonstrated experience with acquisitions, cataloging, serials processes including management of resource records, vendor tracking, licensing terms and other account and subscription information. 

  • Knowledge of core skills, including e-resources and management, automated bibliographic systems, serials control and approval plans. 

  • Basic understanding of licensing and copyright issues. 

  • Knowledge of MARC, Dublin Core. 

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion. 

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. 

  • Ability to lead change and foster innovation. 

 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Strong interpersonal skills; some supervisory experience preferred. 

  • Able to lift 50 lbs.
