Princeton University Library has two openings in Digital Repository and Discovery Services (DRDS), joining the current six-person team that manages our Samvera digital repository and related discovery applications, including the Library Catalog, Digital PUL, Maps Portal, and DataSpace.
Princeton University Library is one of the world's leading research libraries, serving a diverse community of 5,200 undergraduates, 2,700 graduate students, 1,200 faculty members, and many visiting scholars. Its holdings include more than 7 million printed volumes, 5 million manuscripts, 2 million non-print items, and extensive collections of digital text, data, and images.
The Library employs a dedicated and knowledgeable staff of more than 300 professional and support staff working in a large central library, 9 specialized branches, and 3 storage facilities.
These two positions have similar requirements, but will focus on different areas:
- Discovery Infrastructure Developer: This position will focus on maintaining the Library Catalog, the primary gateway for users to discover and access all of the resources in the Library's collections, including electronic resources and digitized content from our digital repository. In the short term, this position will help support the Library's migration from Voyager to Alma.
- Research Data Developer: This position will focus on expanding the Library's support for research data, including improving data deposit and curation workflows, building a unified discovery portal for data that Princeton researchers have deposited locally or in third-party repositories, and integrating with ORCID, Globus, and cloud storage.
- Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience
- Demonstrated experience with an object oriented language, preferably Ruby or Java
- Minimum three years experience, with similar responsibilities, working in an environment that includes complex software systems, object-oriented programming, web-based applications and services, and distributed architecture.
- Demonstrated experience with test-driven development, preferably using common testing frameworks such as RSpec, Jest, or JUnit
- Ability to work in a Linux-based environment
- Willingness to learn new technologies and data/metadata formats
- Strong oral and written communication skills
Preference will be given to candidates who have significant experience with open source software development, including the ability to communicate and collaborate with other developers and managers, in person and in writing, both locally and around the world, or with any of the following:
- Other programming languages such as Python or R
- Common tools for source code version control, collaboration, and deployment; such as Git, GitHub, Capistrano or Ansible
DevOps and deployment automation
Working With Data and Metadata
- Metadata formats related to cultural heritage (such as MARC, EAD, MODS, and Dublin Core); geospatial or research data more broadly
- Research data management and/or institutional repositories
- Data modeling and data management best practices
- Data harvesting APIs such as OAI-PMH or ResourceSync
- Advanced degree in Library Science, Computer Science, Geographic Information Systems, or another research field
