POSITION TITLE: Director, Digital Initiatives

SUPERVISOR: Assistant Dean, Digital & Research Strategies

DEPARTMENT:  Digital Initiatives

STATUS:  Full-time

 

The Director, Digital Initiatives is responsible for leading digital transformation projects at the River Campus Libraries (RCL). The incumbent will help shape RCL’s digital strategy and ensure that the library’s digital infrastructure can effectively support our strategic aims and the teaching, learning and research mission of the University. Leveraging systems thinking and creative problem-solving skills, alongside a deep understanding of information technologies, the Director will help deliver targeted and strategic service, systems, workflow, and design solutions to address a range of patron needs. The position is responsible for the management, planning, and continuous improvement of the library’s website, digital projects, infrastructure, research application development, interface design, and digital library systems. The incumbent manages a team of five IT professionals, and collaborates with colleagues to support and develop digital programs and services across the University of Rochester Libraries. 

 

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Digital Transformation 40%

·       Develop strategies and workflows to innovate and improve library programs and services through the integration of digital processes and technologies

·       Collaborate with library colleagues to design and deliver outstanding digital experiences of RCL’s collections, spaces, programs, and expertise

·       Remain current on trends in emerging technologies, research computing, application development, digital library initiatives, online learning, and user experience, and use that knowledge to inspire transformative projects and new collaborations

·       Build relationships and partnerships with research and IT stakeholders across the University

 

Digital Infrastructure Management 30%

·       Lead projects across the entire project lifecycle

·       Ensure a user-centered approach to solution design

·       Plan and manage the maintenance and continuous improvement of library digital infrastructure

·       Identify and prioritize departmental projects to ensure alignment with RCL strategic aims

·       Manage the implementation, development, upgrading, and sunsetting of systems and software

·       Ensure alignment with University IT systems and strategies

 

Leadership & Management: 20%

·       Develop high-impact departmental goals that directly support RCL’s strategic aims and encourage robust cross-unit/library and cross-functional work

·       Provide coaching, mentorship, and performance management for expert IT professional staff, including formal performance reviews

·       Ensure staff have access to ongoing and relevant leadership and skill development opportunities

·       Nurture and grow the department’s agile, high-trust, and strategically-focused culture

 

Miscellaneous Duties: 10%

·       Maintain currency with library functions, resources, practices and procedures

·       Participate in and contribute towards River Campus Libraries and University committees, meetings, and events

·       Maintain professional collaborations with River Campus Libraries colleagues and campus constituencies

·       Contribute to the profession through active participation in conferences, associations, research, writing, etc.

·       Perform other duties as assigned

 

Required:

·       Advanced degree in library, information, or computer science, or equivalent combination of knowledge and experience

·       Project management experience

·       Commitment to user-centered philosophies in system and service design

·       Knowledge in one or more of the following areas: software development, web development, digital library systems, user experience, and/or research computing

·       Demonstrated ability to discover, and quickly become competent using, new technologies, software, and devices; willingness to explore the use of innovative technologies with a high tolerance for risk, ambiguity, and failure

·       Outstanding interpersonal skills and abilities, and comfort working collaboratively in a team environment

·       Ability to form strong, collaborative connections

·       Outstanding verbal, written, and presentation skills

·       Self-starter who is flexible, creative, and open to new challenges

·       Demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion

 

Preferred:

·       Experience leading and managing teams

·       Familiarity with at least one programming language (e.g: Java, Python, Ruby)

·       Familiarity with current trends in digital library initiatives

·       Experience with the Alma library services platform
