UI/UX Designer
Description
The River Campus Libraries (RCL) seeks a creative and collaborative UI/UX Designer to join the Digital & Research Strategies portfolio. The incumbent will lead user interface design, functional prototyping, and graphic design efforts for RCL’s digital initiatives, including the library’s web presence, research applications, AR/VR projects, wayfinding, and physical and digital signage. Reporting to Assistant Dean, Digital & Research Strategies, the UI/UX Designer leverages strong skills in user experience design, experience in front-end web development, and expertise in visual design to create transformative and engaging digital tools, services, and experiences.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
UX/UI Design 40%
· Champion user-centered interaction models
· Maintain knowledge of current and emerging UI design concepts, standards, and best practices
· Develop UI mockups and prototypes to communicate design ideas to stakeholders and support project planning
· Illustrate design ideas by leveraging wireframes, story boards, user flows, process flows, and site maps
· Design graphic user interface elements like menus, controls, and other visual elements in alignment with University standards and guidelines
· Create usable and accessible graphics, images, and logos for physical signs and web and mobile applications
· Collaborate with staff to consistently improve functionality and experience of RCL digital initiatives
Support for Front-End Development 20%
· Collaborate with developers to build, test, and implement responsive web applications and experiences
· Particpate in the design of software platform architecture and databases, as appropriate
· Understand project requirements and carry out project planning, tracking, and implementation activities
Support for Library Initiatives 20%
· Collaborate with the immersive technologies program (Studio X) to provide UI and UX expertise for select AR/VR projects
· Collaborate with the Digital Scholarship Lab to provide UI and UX expertise for select
faculty research projects
· Collaborate with other RCL departments to provide UI and UX expertise for select library initiatives
· Provide guidance and information on emerging trends and new technologies
Professional Development 10%
· Explore new trends in user experience, interface design, programming and development
· Prototype new tools and run pilot projects to test new technologies
· Participate in professional networks and organizations to expand knowledge base and share our work with a broader community
Miscellaneous Duties: 10%
· Maintains currency with library functions, resources, practices and procedures
· Participates in and contributes towards River Campus Libraries and University committees, meetings, and events
· Maintains professional collaborations with River Campus Libraries colleagues and university constituencies
· Performs other duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS
Required:
· Bachelor’s degree plus relevant programming experience (2+ years combined between education and experience)
· Portfolio highlighting multiple projects and your direct contributions
· Experience applying user-centered philosophies and interaction design best practices
· Ability to translate user ideas and design mock-ups to working prototypes
· Knowledge of HTML5, CSS and SASS
· Knowledge of JavaScript
· Working knowledge of version control software (Git)
· Experience with design software (Sketch, Adobe Creative Cloud)
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
· Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and engage with stakeholders
· Ability to work independently and in a team environment with a high degree of accountability
· Demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity, equity and inclusion
· Familiarity with WCAG 2.0 and 508 Accessibility guidelines
Preferred:
● Background in user interface design, user experience, and/or computer science
● Knowledge of modern front-end frameworks (React, Angular, Vue, Foundation)
● Familiarity with major CMS and MVC frameworks (Drupal, WordPress, Omeka, Django)
● Familiarity with multiple development stacks (LAMP, MERN)
● Comfortable working in a Unix environment
● Familiarity with game design engines (Unity, Unreal)
● Familiarity with package management tools (Yarn, NPM)
