The University of Delaware Library, Museums and Press seeks an early career librarian with an interest in visual literacy instruction. Information increasingly comes from visual sources, and this residency program will support an enthusiastic new professional who is passionate about helping learners develop visual literacy and evaluation skills. The Resident will participate in the life cycle of museum exhibitions, set personal learning goals related to teaching, and provide leadership in instruction-related projects in the library and museums, resulting in a diverse portfolio of instructional activities. 

Reporting jointly to the Assistant Head of Instructional Services and Curator of Education and Outreach, the Resident will be able to learn from a diverse and seasoned team of curators and librarians. Working closely with colleagues within the Museums and the Reference and Instructional Services team, as well as with teaching librarians in the Student Multimedia Design Center, the Resident will have the opportunity to lead efforts to transform our teaching materials and approaches in ways that will integrate visual literacy skills into our instruction program.

The Resident will also have opportunities to participate in the following activities:

  • Design tours of Museums exhibitions that encourage students to develop visual literacy skills;
  • Participate in the English 110 working group to teach research skills and concepts to freshman composition courses, with particular emphasis on sections that have multimedia assignments;
  • Contribute to the development of programming for first-year students, including programs related to the university’s Common Reader;
  • Participate in a structured instruction training program which will include classroom observation, reflection, and discussion with the various departments in the library and museums that provide educational services;
  • Develop co-curricular outreach and educational programs for students with a focus on visual literacy in collaboration with the Student Success and Outreach librarian.

In addition, as a member of the Reference and Instructional Services department, the Resident will provide general research assistance in person and online, including some evening and weekend hours.

The Pauline A. Young Residency is a three-year appointment offering professional experience in an academic research library to recent graduates of a library/information science program. The residency is designed to meet both the professional goals and interests of the Resident as well as the service and operational priorities of the Library. The residency features orientation to all library areas, mentoring, committee service, and support for travel to professional meetings and conferences. The Resident will have the opportunity to shape the direction of the residency and develop goals according to their professional interests. The purpose of the residency is to encourage the involvement of individuals from under-represented groups in academic librarianship. Started in 1984, the Pauline A. Young Residency is among the Library's most successful efforts to advance equity, diversity and inclusion.

Qualifications: Recent graduate degree from an ALA-accredited program. Experience providing public service and instruction in a library setting. Familiarity with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher education and information literacy best practices. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Commitment to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population. Commitment to professional growth. Preferred: Familiarity with developing and executing programs for undergraduate students. Familiarity with instructional design principles and assessment of learning. A background in art, art history, or museum studies, or experience working with rare and unique objects.

The Museums include a diverse collection of art, with special strengths in American art of the 20th century (especially prints, photographs and work by African American artists), European prints, Inuit art, Pre-Columbian art, and minerals. Art exhibitions in Old College Gallery and Mechanical Hall Gallery, mineralogical exhibitions in Penny Hall, and exhibitions in the Morris Library engage students, scholars, the UD community and the general public.
